WIP - Parts not dollars

We are an ETO capital manufacturing equipment manufacturer, with very large assemblies (I’ve seen as high as 700 subassemblies). We use AMM for our material flow process. We have SigmaNest for our nesting software, and have automated transactions with Nestlink.

After parts are cut, labels are automatically printed and matched up to the parts. From there, they get “kitted” into weld, using a WIP PCID. A WIP PCID only has 1 job and 1 asm per PCID.

This works good. Each PCID job/asm combo either goes straight to the IN BIN of the weld resource group, or we override the MRQ record to locate the PCID to the shelf. As long as the WIP PCID is in the IN BIN of the RG when the operator takes the completion, the WIP flushes out of the PCID and empties it. This all works great when our people do what they are supposed to.

If mistakes happen, moving WIP out of a WIP PCID takes an act of god. I’ve only had success with Move WIP, to move it out of a PCID.

I feel like I’m missing something fundamental about WIP movements in Epicor. I’ve found that if WIP moves up the assembly (from asm 50 → asm 4), you can’t move it back. Basically if you need to move it anywhere other than laterally (from asm 50 op 20 to asm 50 op 10), it’s not possible.

Am I missing something that makes this easier? Why is moving the physical location (not the costs) of the part so hard?
