Zebra Printers

There should be any extra interface other than what's there. You do need to
go into CR and define THAT printer for THAT form. Yes.... Zebra's can do
some pretty strange things in not configured correctly. Our Zebras are set
up with cutters so we can run a variety of label lengths from .75 long to
7.50 long. Its all in setting up the printer defaults and in the report
configuration. There is a lot of playing to dial them in. Once dialed in
and your reports are correct they run very solid. If you get one plan on a
week of learning its traits. For general employee interface I prefer an
Eltron also by Zebra but very very simple and easy to use. You don't have
the Zebra flexibility and speed but setting up is a piece of cake.

Subject: [Vantage] Zebra Printers

I'm contemplating setting up our data collection workstations with Zebra
thermal printers to print out identification tags when employees clock out
of job activities. I had a demo printer in the other day, installed the
drivers, sucessfully printed a "test page", but when trying to print the
"tag" with data collection, there was no communication with the printer.

The "tag" is a Crystal Report form and I tried to print directly from
Crystal Reports, with the Zebra printer as a default, and it's hard to
describe what CR tried to do - other than to say it wasn't pretty. CR
bogged down in just opening the report - looked like it was trying to load
the same data numerous times (just in design view) so I had to shut down CR.

Any ideas whats happening. I know from previous threads that many of you
are using Zebra printers, so any help would be appreciated. Do I need to
load something else as an interface/aid for Vantage to communicate with
Zebra printers?

thanks

I have seen several posts in the archive regarding printing labels on
a Zebra printer. I looks as if there has been success with printing
the Crystal Reports Shipping Label. It also appears that this only
happens after messing around with the printer drivers. Am I correct?
Also we don't want to spend $1300 on a label printer. Anyone having
any luck with the cheaper Zebra models?

Thanks
Hi,

I've been using a Zebra TLP 2844 for a little over a year now without
any problems.

I've had success with Eltron Direct Thermal, about $350.00 rebuilt. Good
for onezies twozies label production. Label stock is tad more expensive,
Roles of stock are smaller so you have to reload more often, but loading is
simple and quick. If your need is to run 20, 30, 40 plus labels at a shot.
The Zebra is for you, if you are doing on demand requirements of few labels
at a time then the Eltron is good. An advantage with the Zebra is that with
the CUTTER accessory you can create labels from .750 inches long to 12
inches long using continuous label stock. (the Zebra is Thermal Transfer,
ribbon and stock) we calc cost per 4 x 6 label at about .005 per label.
With the Eltron you use Perffed stock and are stuck with the size you
bought. (You can use other sizes but I really didn't want 10 different
sizes if I could get away with just one.

Thanks for your response Bob. Did you have to do anything with the
driver or did it work right off the bat. Also did you get the network
version or the stand alone?

Stand alone. USB to the workstation in ship/rec-crib. Share it with
the network
so everyone can print to it. Had to update the driver and firmware from
their web site. I use the thermal transfer labels. Kind of expensive
per label but we don't print that much, 1 to 20 per day. I'm using a 2"
x 4" label.
