Zero Value Inventory

We are currently migrating to Epicor and was wondering if any of you do
something similar to this:

In our existing system we have what we call penny inventory. We may
purchase a part specifically for a manufacturing job. This part we do
not currently stock. In the end, if we don't use that part, it is still
costed to that job but we put it back into our inventory at a penny. Is
anyone doing something similar with epicor and if so how are you handing
it?

Thanks!

Check out Answerbook #8782MPS about setting the schema holder to read
only. Have you done this? We did last week and I think Vantage is a lot
more stable on SQL now.

Hello Gary, Are you still having this issue?

We were having a similar problem on Win64 with SQL 2005 64 bit. Our
app servers would just stop serving client requests. We would be
lucky to get 24 hours of system stability.

I applied the latest open edge patch 3. We are currently on
8.03.403C. This has helped the progress app servers stay stable for us.

The real down side for us is we purchased this system for 100
concurrent users and this (among other issues) technical glitch
completely halted our implementation. We have service and support,
pre-paid, and they did not even help us for 4 months. I feel lucky we
are not yet in production and completely regret purchasing vantage.

Yes, we very frequently make more parts on a job than the order requires to handle quality drop out, etc...especially cosmetic parts. We cost these to the job but end up putting them in a sort of finished good inventory at zero (or penny) value because we have no reason to expect we will ever be able to sell them. I think because they are custom parts with no market and not backed up by a PO the accounting principles are to zero value it. Later if we do sell it (customer damaged some parts in their operations or did actually re-order it) we sell them (if rev. level still OK) at a very good margin...basically 100%. After a long time (year?) we purge out the ones that have no chance and put them in the scrap metal bins if we can't convince the customer to take the extras at a really steep discount. We track it all with Vantage as finished goods so when taking a new order for the part we can check and sell the old stuff first...adjusting the new job's qty accordingly.

Why does it have a value at all? If you have already consumed the cost
of the materials in a job, the cost of the materials would be $0.00. On
the other hand if you didn't use it and took it back out of the job, you
have a better P&L on the job and the parts are in inventory with their
original cost.

With Vista/Vantage if you do a return materials, it will place it back
into inventory at its original cost. Otherwise, you have to do an
inventory cost adjustment to place a value on that part and then do an
inventory adjustment to get that part back into stock at the new value
of the parts. With that you will have indicated that the materials were
consumed in the job and the job absorbed that cost and that by a
miracle, you now have the same amount of parts in stock and at a
particular cost.
