Patrick,

One issue is that the name field is split into first and last names each
with their own block. This alone is no big deal. The sticky issues revolve
around blocks 13 to 15 where there have been some changes that are not so
straight-forward. I haven't got involved enough yet to figure how
significant these are but knowing the IRS they can't be making things
easier!

5.0 is out, lets upgrade. It seems like that the same 20 people are always

onelist doing the upgrade thing. I agree with the previous comment that

learning curve for our company was large for 3.0 and we are finally
getting
to the point where it is not costing us money.

I plan on staying on 3.0 for a while but I think it stinks that epicor is
screwing us who cannot jump right out and upgrade. We pay our maintenance
fees, and bluntly I want an update W2 sheet for my 3.0.

Perhaps my memory is off.

3.0 - fall of 1998
4.0 - fall of 1999
5.0 - fall of 2000
5.1 - fall of 2001

While it's true there were al lot of problems with 5.0 at first, there was a
real effort to fix the problems. Some of which were with Progress. It has
worked well. I've been on it for quite a while and have very little
problems. I upped to 5.1 about a month ago. I find major differences in
5.1. Lots of new screens, features etc. To say it is just a patch for 5.0
is stretching it a bit. I'm very happy with 5.1 now. It hasn't been
flawless, but what is? As far as the W2 issue, isn't it a Crystal report.
Not too hard to change. But I'm not real sure what our gov. changed on the
W2's.

5.0 was released too early, sure. But certainly not junk in it's current
version!

Well the balance is really off... The way I see it version 5.0 was not
tested and was released too early. The people flocking to it had problems.
They came out with version 5.1 right away and It's basically a huge patch
for version 5.0 We had such big problems when we went from version 3.0 to
4.0 that we decided to wait on version 5.0 Now we are making plans to go to
version 5.1 after the first of the year... we still have to go through
version 5.0...remember it's junk... before we can get to version 5.1 Epicor
should find a way to get people off the earlier version and make a direct
path to the latest release. I think the upgrade path is making it tough to
get people to the new release. I'm sure they want everyone on the new
release, so make it easier and get what everyone wants. They seem to be
money hounds, so I don't know why they can't get a W2 form for all releases
and charge someone a reasonable amount for it. They might stick a couple of
hundred in their pockets to pay someone to fully test the next release of
Vantage before they start shipping it.

My two cents worth.....

The good stuff.....
For us, being SQL server users, 5.1 was a major improvement. The
interface with SQL 2000 instead of SQL 7.0 and the Progress 9.1C
data server product brought us significant performance increases.
Several of the enhancements in 5.1 are making everything flow much
smoother here. The Transfer inventory screen alone was worth the
upgrade. Being required to give a user inventory adjustment rights
to move inventory from one location to another was a nightmare. I
also appreciate all the new VB forms in 5.1. I guess the data
conversion/schema change must run much faster on SQL Server because
our 1.1GB database only took about 35 minutes to convert from 5.0 to
5.1. I also have to wonder if Progress doesn't deserve some of the
fault here. Progress cuts support of their older products off
fairly quickly after a new version is released forcing Epicor to
also change versions. I'm sure it's not easy for Epicor to stay
abreast of all the changes to the Progress platform. I also agree
that Epicor shouldn't be expected to continue support for products
that are out dated. I have worked with other ERP/Accounting
applications and most of them have required upgrades and patches to
be current to receive proper technical support. Of course, those
databases didn't take all weekend to perform a data conversion.

The Bad Stuff.....
There is no way Vantage 5.1 was ran for any length of time live at a
beta site. The STK-CUS transactions didn't adjust inventory levels
accordingly. We where live for about 8 hours before we figured this
one out. If there were truly testing done, this would have been
caught and fixed before the final release. I understand that there
are going to be errors pop up here and there and un-desired side
effects from making changes to modules but this was a BIG ONE. I
worked for a software developer and we had one company that
volunteered to upgrade before the others. We then focused all our
energy on that company, often having developers on-site during the
upgrade and for several weeks after. We found that by spending the
extra time and development expense we released a significantly more
robust and error free product. We also got allot of good ideas from
the end-user that we included in later releases.

Many of you asked for the list of bugs that I found. Here are 18 of
36 that are non-sql related issues. Most of them have been fixed by
patches as of patch 10.

1)STK-CUS Transactions are not changing the inventory level

2)Received from Subcontract to Workorder and then sent to inspection
but inspection is unable to pull it up in DMR Processing.

3)Transaction Shows up in every place but DMR's

4)Any packing slips that where open at the time of conversion
captured costs twice

5)In Job Processing, The revision level isn't updated when you
append the new methods from the part master file. Prints on
Travelor wrong.

6)Customer Shipment Tracker - Doesn't show when a shipment has been
invoiced.

7)Bank rec and edit list do not balance

8)Unable to run Global Finite Scheduling without getting a lot of
Errors

9)Some costs left on job after good quantity moved to stock

10)Errors building relationship table

11)No customer record is available (91) in part tracker from an RMA

12)PO Status is not flagged completed or closed upon receipt

13)When we print AP Checks we get the error "Foreign Database Cursor
not found (Error 0)

14)RMA Processing comments causes amount of DMR to double every time

15)In Job Processing, when we try to update a job with a newer
revision it gives us an error "Cannont insert a duplicate key row in
object 'joboper' with unique index 'jobasseq'"

16)Not updateing Production Qty when we relink a SO line to a job -
Spawns several errors and may kick user out of Vantage

18)empbasic record not found(91) with Wip and DataCollections when
all records are ok.

Haven't seen an answer yet - so here goes....
1) Page size is now the full 8-1/2" instead of having a perforated tab to
remove.
2) Name field is separated not only from first and last name, but also
address field has its own letter designated field.
3)Box numbers have shifted starting at box #12 which is now split into
several lines (a-d) instead of just one line.
4)Last year's Box 15 is this years Box 13.
5)Last year's Box 13 has been eliminated.
6)State information has been moved around. Last year's Box 19 is this year's
Box 20, etc.

In other words, lots of changes.

Here is a list of the changes to the W-2' for 2001

1). Increased form width to 8.5"
2). Reformatted employee's name in box e.
3). Enlarged boxes for money amounts, adding shading and dollars signs.
4). Deleted format box 12, "Benefits included in box 1".
5). Reformatted former box 13 (new box 12) for four entries.
6). Deleted "Deceased," "Legal rep.," and "Deferred compensation" checkboxes
in new box 13 (formerly box 15)
7). Relabeled "Pension plan" checkbox in new box 13 as "Retirement plan"
8). Added a checkbox for "Third-party sick pay" in new box 13.
9). Relocated "Locality name." "Local wages, tips, etc," and "Local income
tax" box (formerly boxes 19-21).

I did this research yesterday in preparation for my year end and thought I
would share it with the rest of you. No sense in all of us reading through
those IRS documents.

Thanks for the info, I'm sill trying to figure out exactly what the issues
are. I'm on 5.00.317 and don't want to go to the 5.00.335 patch just for a
form. I have some modifications to consider. I guess now I need to see if
the BOX #12 lines a-d are a program change when generating the Form or if
those fields are available already.

So, which of these problems have been fixed by the patches? Numbers will
do, I just want to know, since I'm migrating next week.
