You probably already have considered the following, but just in case ...
In W98, you can use a windows accessible version of IPConfig (Start -
Run - browse to C:\windows - look for the IPConfig.exe program). When
the disconnect has occurred run IPConfig and see if a "renew" brings it
back. If so, check the power settings (control panel) set to always
on. Also, check the BIOS settings (on the bootup - go into "setup") to
disable any hibernation, shutdown or sleep mode.
If that doesn't do it, check that the router settings aren't the cause.
Check scheduled tasks. Make sure something isn't scheduled to run that
interferes with the network port.
Although unlikely, check to make sure there is no VPN or VNC activity
with this machine. (When they run, the network connection is usually
disabled.)
You could have some kind of malware trying to get out that interferes
with the network card when it initiates. If you don't have one running,
put a software firewall on (such as ZoneAlarm - http://www.zonelabs.com
- basic version free) to troubleshoot that issue.
If it still isn't solved, you may have to start considering some
hardware issues (ie., power supply problems, fan cooling - overheating,
etc.). For example, PC overheats, begins a shutdown, etc,. etc; or, how
much drive space is available; or, memory & drive health.
Hope this helps.
