If they've made all these improvements in V.8.03.408 - is anyone using EDI in E9 and how is that working for you? We are going to go to E9 on 4/1/10.

We are in the first stages of EDI, as well. Our current volume is small,
but after we prove it out, I have many customers and suppliers who will
want to jump on board. Do you use Service Connect to process the data?
Do you have any "lag" issues? (My previous life, we used lot tracking,
and it really bogged SC down. Does it have that issue with EDI?) Do you
use EDI primarily for customer contact, or also for suppliers?

We currently do not have EDI implemented, we have a future customer that requires EDI transactions.

We would need to use the following transactions 810, 820, 850, 855, 856, and 997.
This would be a very small amount of transactions.

The 820 and 997 would not be "integrated". The 997 can be viewed in TIE
eVision, but there is no need to bring it to Vantage. The 820 can be
"mapped" to a report type output, but not directly sent to Vantage
(unless you have a custom Service Connect workflow).



The 810,850,855 and 856 are available to map into Vantage. Most of the
functions you need are likely there, but you may need some custom fields
for your specific requirements - which can be cone in Vantage with UD
fields most likely.



We are currently using the 810,850 and 856 and have had relatively few
issues with these transactions. We have also tested the 855 for a
future EDI customer and did not have any issues there. I have not yet
seen if Vantage is able to accommodate the MAN segments for 856 or not
(no need yet), but I have dealt with these in another ERP system.



Some of the advancements have been added fields (so less custom fields
needed), automation for output. There are also other advancements for
other transactions.

We are attempting to do it, but it hasn't been an enjoyable experience. I'll tell you what I know.

No matter what you heard, before 8.03.408 Epicor did not have an EDI solution. What they had was a bunch of third party applications, service connect, and some report data definitions to get your data out of Vantage. It was up to you to integrate and make everything work.

Starting with 408, they standardized their report data definitions and created a standard service connect workflow to bring in EDI into Demand Management. As of 408b, they are still making fixes and changes, so if possible I would wait untill 409.

It will still be up to you to create the maps. What little they have in their standard maps is of very little help. If I had it to do all over, I would contract out the mapping. Another big headache is the output of information from Vantage to EDI. They use a print process with custom report data definitions that create output files instead of printing. Not only is this cumbersome, but it is obvious that whoever created the report definitions didn't understand EDI. For example, serial numbers are stored in their EDI invoice output file as a single 1000 character field with comma deliniated serial numbers. This makes it almost (but not entirely) impossible to include them in you outbound 810. And unless you have the SDK, you won't be able to customize the report data definitions for EDI.

And don't expect much support from Epicor with EDI unless you are willing to pay extra. I have found two obvious bugs within Vantage in regards to EDI, and it took me weeks just to convice someone that they were bugs and I wasn't going to pay their customer solutions group to fix their bugs. Even more frustrating was that one of the bugs was a known bug and they already had a one off fix for it, but apparently only one person at Epicor knew about it and she was sequestered in an underground military bunker at an undisclosed location :).

As far as the Tie and Epicor interface setup, there is no interface. Inbound EDI is processed though Service Connect into demand management, but getting the right file format from Tie into Service connect is up to you. Installing the EDI workflow for Service Connect is pretty straight forward, but I would have TIE create the maps for you. Outbound is not much more then setting up some report data definitions and styles and then creating a BAM to output the data. From their TIE has to pick up the files, map them, and send the resulting EDI out to the customer. Again, have TIE create the maps for you unless you are really experienced at it.

So to recap, Epicor's EDI solution requires you to set up report data definitions, report styles, BAMs, a service connect work flow, third party maps like SPEDI map and eVision, and third party communication software. Yes, you will need help and Yes you need to be at least 408a and preferably 409.

I also forgot to mention to Greg that the new Service Connect workflows

We are not using Vantage EDI - we export .csv files and then our 3rd party EDI picks handles everything for us. So all incoming documents are pulled/printed and manually entered. (A very manual/cumbersomeprocess) I recently received an e-mail from SPSCOMMERCE that they have an EDI solution that worked with Epicor's Vantage. I haven't had time to look into this. Has anyone else heard of this or used it?

SPS Commerce is our EDI Partner and they have not shared a solution with us even though we have requested it.....very interesting we are on version 804B.
