BAQ Report with ODBC subreport

Yes, I am trying to run it from the same machine that I wrote the
crystal report on, using the same system DSN. In fact after getting
the error I can go to the ..\mfgsysdata\reports\<uname> directory,
and find the .xml file. Replace the sample data file that is created
by the BAQ report tool with the newly generated file. Open the report
in Crystal, and I get the exact report I am looking for. Just not if
I run it from Vantage.
Thanks,
Craig

Is there any trick to creating a Crystal Report using the BAQ Report

You need to enter the password in the Registry Key
HKLM\Software\ODBC\ODBC.INI\{Vantage Entry}

Enter a String Value called Password. Modify that and enter the ODBC
Password

I embed the password in the connection string, while creating the connection in Crystal.

If you¹re using MSSQL you can also use SQL Native Client as your
connection method and use the ³Trusted Connection² option, which lets you
use the user¹s Windows credentials to authenticate the database connection.
This is considerably more secure.

http://www.connectionstrings.com/ is a good resource if you do need to
build connection strings and aren¹t sure of the syntax.

I have not been able to get this to work.
What's your secret?

Cunning? Dead chicken waving? Not sure since I¹m don¹t know what
problems you¹re having. :-)

What I have concluded is that the embedded Crystal Reports viewer in
Vantage doesn¹t work very well. Some of my custom reports that talk
directly to MSSQL simply don¹t display properly in the Vantage viewer but
work fine in other viewers (e.g. the Logicity viewer).

You do need to make sure you add the Windows users accounts of those who
will be running these reports to MSSQL and give them db_datareader access at
a minimum to the database (or those tables involved if you¹re concerned
about security), and any stored procedures you¹re invoking.

must be the dead chicken, :D

I am not sure if it's my misunderstanding of what credentials are being passed.
I created a SQL logon that matches both name and password to the ODBC account you set up in System Agent.
I gave this SQL logon rights to execute the stored procedure, but I get the credentials prompt.
I also gave the SQL logon db_datareader to the database, but had same credentials prompt.

Most of our users go through Citrix, and I am thinking the problem is in that.
When I run Vantage locally, everything works perfectly for me (on my non-admin account). When I go through Citrix I get the prompt.
I can use the embedded ODBC connection string, using a logon that is only given execute to specific stored procedures I write.
Do you see any problem with my logic?

Thank you!

Maybe you're doing something different than I am since I'm using SQL
Native Client and Windows authentication via a MSSQL "Trusted
Connection" instead of ODBC. If you're truly using ODBC are your DSNs
setup correctly and identically on your system vs. the Citrix servers?

I can't answer the question about the relationship between the system
agent ODBC credentials and custom reports as I've never done it.

One thing that I do recall is that when I used SQL Native Client as my
connection method, if the client workstation doesn't have SQL Native
Client installed then you will also see the credentials prompt as the
embedded Crystal Viewer presumably throws some sort exception related to
connecting to the database that Vantage bubbles up to you as an
authentication challenge. It may be falling back to try to connect via
ODBC but it is not clear to me how that would work since the connection
details are embedded in the report itself.

I wrote a WSH/VBScript wrapper that invokes the custom report via the
Logicity viewer after checking to make sure that it and the SQL Native
Client were installed. If they're not, it points the user to a web page
where they can download and install the required components.

Not sure how this relates to your scenario though.

Thanks for the response, but that didn't seem to help. What is really
strange, is that even when I fill in the information (server,
database, table (greyed out), user, password), it doesn't seem to
accept it. The prompt just keeps coming back.
