Bar Codes on Packing Slips

I would check first - For that amount of info, I think 3 of 9 will work the same
as 128 and they should be able to scan 3 of 9 if only 128 in enabled on their
scanners (even though it is unlikely to only enable 128). Every scanner I have
ever used scan 3 of 9 and 128 by default.

Â
Gotcha. OK, they are definitely separate fields and would be separate scans. I
was able to locate the DataWorks Bar 39 font, but it looks like we're gonnaa
need to purchase a Code 128 font.

[Non-text portions of this message have been removed]
Hello.
We have a customer who is requiring all of their vendors to start sending packing slips with bar codes on them. I am trying to find out how to add bar codes to each line of our existing packing slip in Crystal Reports (we have CR XI). I am assuming that we would need to download and install some type of font, but the mystery is from where to we download the font and into where do we install it.

Any ideas?
The font is included with the Vantage installation. Check the server's
install and look for dwbar.ttf and install it on all of the clients that
will use barcodes.

Cool! Now for a stupid question, where exactly would I find that particular file and where would it need to be installed on the clients?

You need to run a search on the server that has Vantage/Epicor installed for
"DataWorks Bar 39".

You need to copy this into the client c:\windows\fonts folder.

Do you know how to add these to the Crystal Report?

What data do you need to be turned into a barcode?

Thanks.

The most common barcode is called "3 of 9", and you'll often see it abbreviated "39". Its font file is available several places, including as part of Vantage. Install in Windows folder as suggested below, or use Control Panel -> Fonts -> Install New Font.

Experiment in Word/your favourite word processor... type *123456* (the star before and after is required) then change the font to your barcode font, then print and scan to test. Doing this in a Crystal report is just (a) create a new field with a formula of (eg) the PO number with stars before & after and (b) change the font on that new field.

You mention making a barcode for line#... many scanners won't scan very short barcodes like *1* by default - look for a scanner setting called "any length". Spaces in barcodes can be a headache as well.

Brian.

[Non-text portions of this message have been removed]
If you are wanting to create barcodes in Crystal it is fairly easy

You need to create a formula with the data you require then add to your report.

Then change the new field font to DataWorks 3 of 9.

You always need a * at the beginning and end of a typical linear barcode ( like
you see in the supermarket ).

I would recommend enabling full ascii on the barcode guns.

Then you can use special characters in your barcode to act like a space,
carriage return, tab etc without typing them in text (as the barcode font wont
like this and it will show as a gap in the barcode).

If you want to move to PDF 417 (2D barcodes you can do much more).

Let me know if you need an example.

Did you want to see all of that data in one barcode, if so it may be too long
for a 3 of 9 barcode.

What separator would you use if it was all in one string?

Our customer wants us to use Code 128. I'm not sure what the difference is, but that's what they're asking for.
As far as a separator, I'm not sure what you mean unless you just mean something like a dash. We're completely new to the whole bar code thing as we've never had to use it before. We won't have any readers. The bar code will just be for our customer's convenience.

If you're brand new to barcode fonts...

The most common barcode is called "3 of 9", and you'll often see it abbreviated
"39". Its font file is available several places, including as part of Vantage.
Install in Windows folder as suggested below, or use Control Panel -> Fonts ->
Install New Font.

Experiment in Word/your favourite word processor... type *123456* (the star
before and after is required) then change the font to your barcode font, then
print and scan to test. Doing this in a Crystal report is just (a) create a new
field with a formula of (eg) the PO number with stars before & after and (b)
change the font on that new field.

You mention making a barcode for line#... many scanners won't scan very short
barcodes like *1* by default - look for a scanner setting called "any length".
Spaces in barcodes can be a headache as well.

Brian.

[Non-text portions of this message have been removed]
I mean do you need one barcode for one thing, another barcode for another etc or
do you want them combined such as OrderNum/PONum etc. The separator being the /.

I believe Code 128 is very similar to Code 39 except Code 128 uses all Ascii
characters as standard (which is the same as enabling 'Full Ascii' on the
scanner. (could be wrong - maybe someone could clarify)

It might be worth buying a cheap scanner so you can test the barcodes.

You need to establish the exact fields ( and order ) that your customer wants
converting to a barcode. You also need to find out if they need it in one
barcode or several. You also need to know if they need a separator such as a
character ( / - etc - avoid *) or a TAB or Carriage Return.

Here is an example formula in Crystal ....

"*" & ToText({JobHead.JobNum}) & "$I" & "*"

The * and * at each end tell the scanner where the beginning and the end of the
barcode is.

The & signs tie the barcode together, without these it wouldnt work.

So this formula takes the JobHead.JobNum field and converts it to text (so it
doesnt put any decimal places or anything on it that isnt there in the xml
output from crystal).

The $I is ascii for TAB.

When scanned, this barcode outputs the following:

123456[TAB OUT OF FIELD] (where 123456 is the Job Number).

Note - the * do not get output as they are only there for the scanner to use
(unless you want to output them).

So if you wanted to string a few fields together you could use something like
this ...

"*"&ToText({Table1.Field1})&"$I"&ToText({Table2.Field2})&"$I"&ToText({Table3.Field3})&"$I"&"*"

Note - you dont have to have spaces in the formula but it helps when trying to
read it clearly.

When scanned into e.g. Excel, this would put Field1 into cell A1, tab to A2, put
Field2 in A2, tab to A3, put Field3 in A3, tab to A4.

Sometimes it isnt necessary to use ToText in which case you would omit the
ToText().

We also use Chr(9) as a Tab and Chr(13) - You can also use Chr(32) which I think
is a space.

To use these you simply do this ...

"*" & ToText({JobHead.JobNum}) & Chr(9) &"*"

Â
Our customer wants us to use Code 128. I'm not sure what the difference is, but
that's what they're asking for.
As far as a separator, I'm not sure what you mean unless you just mean something
like a dash. We're completely new to the whole bar code thing as we've never had
to use it before. We won't have any readers. The bar code will just be for our
customer's convenience.

Hi Lauren

Have you got something like this?

"*" & ToText({JobHead.JobNum}) & "$I" & "*"

The * need to be in " " and needs to be followed by a &
If you send me your formula I will have a look.

Thanks.

Brian.

Ok, thanks.
Actually no, I'm not sure how to add these to the Crystal Report yet. I was
hoping it would make itself evident once I reached that step. The data that will

need to be barcoded is:
PO Number; Release #; Line #; Part Number; Revision; and Quantity.

Gotcha. OK, they are definitely separate fields and would be separate scans. I was able to locate the DataWorks Bar 39 font, but it looks like we're gonnaa need to purchase a Code 128 font.
