appeared in 6.1 without any help decription.

I believe it functions as a COM/SMTP Server. When Vantage generates an email I think it is now routed through this program. I think it also is used to make the links inside the email functional.

I know one of the functions is to send out alerts setup in the Business
Activity Monitor. You can't just run the process server though. You
have to go to the menu options and start the service. Make sure you
only run one copy of the process server on your network.

I already use the the Global alerts process server. Business activity
manager e-mails go through the global alerts server. What I am stuck on
is what is the Business Activity process server for?

Jeremy,

The problem with the assorted responses that don't seem to coincide is
due to the subject line.

You are referring to the Business Activity "Query" Process not the
"Manager" process.

There are several answers about what the "Manager" does, but to help
sort it out, this is what I have learned.

Alerts and emails that are sent using the Business Activity "Manager" in
Vantage are sent using the Global Alerts Process.

This can be set to auto start when the process server is started.

The Business Activity Query process automatically runs any Business
Activity "Queries" you have set up with the type set to the new XML
format that showed up with 6.1 also.

What I have used this for is to set up exports of data using the
Activity Query. You can then use Vantage to set up an ASP page to view,
sort and filter the data. I export about a dozen queries that run
automatically. These run on the computer running the process server (in
my case the Vantage server). I export the data to XML files on that
server and then copy them to a web directory where the ASP files look at
the XML file. If you are planning on turning on this feature, I
recommend setting a delay of several minutes or you will have the
queries running back to back and using up in our case about 50% of the
dual processors capacity constantly.

If you would like any additional information about this process, let me
know. I have played with it extensively. My biggest frustration is
that I can't set it to auto-start as I can the others.
