I should expound that if you keep your forecast in your live ( we did
for a time then we quit, now were bringing it back again) you need to
have one kick ass server running Vantage or depending on the forecast
you put into Vantage MRP/Global can turn into quite a marathon. We take
our forecast out at least six months. For us this translates into
approximately 4,000 forecast suggested jobs. This is all fine and good
except for the sheer amount of process time required. Our current
server choked on this and took 18 hours to run a regenerative MRP. We
subsequently moved the forecast to a test server which then took that
out of the loop. The crummy part about that was that everyone had to
look to a different server for the info. Tonight my IT guy and I are
installing a brand new server with interstellar travel capabilities that
will take care of this and Monday morning the forecast will be returning
to the live server. So this may not even be a factor for you depending
on how far you want your forecast out and how many jobs will be created
during the forecast period you run. Typically our MRP cut off date is
120 days to capture our longest lead time items...

You must have been sitting in my office because we just had the
conversation about loading forecasts and enabling planners to
distinguish between forecast-driven suggestions and job-driven
suggestions.
Can you expand on what you do and what you developed a bit?
Thanks!

We use forecast intensively to predict and plan for operational needs
(work center hours/loads). Because forecast results in MRP suggested
jobs it wouldn't be much of a stretch to make a correlation to sales
dollars. This works very well for us. We even take it to the level of
using it for capacity planning for predicted sales as well as an
accurate tool to know whether or not to accept a customer order(s) so we
don't oversell our capability to produce..
There are several tools I had to develop in order to help purchasing
distinguish between purchase suggestions due to forecast vs firm sales
orders, and some for work order control in firming and releasing jobs
for print (forecast vs firm orders).

My management team is looking for better visibility of past
performance vs. backlog vs. forecast to try to understand where things
are heading from a sales perspective.
This information is scattered around Vantage in various places, unless
I'm not looking in the right places.
How are folks supporting these needs?
