Crystal 9

I'm getting in this conversation a little late, but I wanted to
second Troy's statement that Crystal Web Reports are SWEET! The only
problem I've encountered are that some reports that use Sub-reports
are very slow and sometimes hang up the Crystal Web Server. Which
can be fixed by stopping and starting the service. I whole-heartedly
agree that modifying and distributing reports is very nice using this
method.

from the group, you could get the Web server up and running in a
day. After that, distributing reports is so much easier in my
experience. It's easier to modify reports, easier to get them to the
user(s), and easier to manage the organization of reports.

Has anyone purchase Crystal Reports Version 9?
Does it save forms to any prior versions 8.5, 8, etc...?

Patrick Winter
I thought that we had to use 8.5 with Vantage 5.2? If not, I need to cancel
my order for 8.5 quickly.

Near as I can tell this capability is lost from 8.5 onward. I tried every
which way to get it to work in 8.5 and retreated to 8.0. The report
distribution facility downloaded from the CR web site would not install on
8.5 (no menu option is created to activate the wizard). Notes from the CR
web site suggest it is an obsolete feature no longer supported and actually
discouraged. The alternative is web services which requires extra hardware
and software (a web server) and a lot more work than installing a few
distributed reports for selected people. I am not looking forward at all to
being forced to give this up.

I received a promotional announcement from Crystal earlier this week. My
understanding of the compatibility article
http://www.crystaldecisions.com/products/crystalreports/cecompat.asp
<http://www.crystaldecisions.com/products/crystalreports/cecompat.asp>
suggest's that it might not be a good choice to use with Vantage 5.2. I
guess it's time to take Crystal 8.5 off the shelf and try it again.

Todd,
Believe me when I say that once you do give up distributed reports and get to using Crystal Web reporting, I don't think you will regret it. We're using an older 450mhz PC with Windows NT 4.0 installed on it so hardware was not expensive. With some support from the group, you could get the Web server up and running in a day. After that, distributing reports is so much easier in my experience. It's easier to modify reports, easier to get them to the user(s), and easier to manage the organization of reports.

Thanks for the encouragement. I do have this in my 2003 strategic plan and
can probably use our old email server but it sounded like one more layer of
complication. If web services does not require a lot of my time and can do

In regards to an "internal" web server is Best Practice to have a separate
system that does nothing but, or can a web server machine serve multiple
tasks. IE: internet gateway, email server, and an assortment of other small
tasks.

If you're referring to Crystal Enterprise I have it on the same server as Vantage. Not by choice, mind you. Other than a problem with a really long running report (which I finally fixed) we haven't had a problem. I guess the only thing I would change on the server is to install more memory (we're at 512MB). When people are running reports (Crystal Enterprise) and accessing Vantage and I have to change something on the server it does tend to bog my tasks down a little. It's manageable though.

We actually do a lot with our spare CR Web server. It has served as a spare PC for Temp data entry, Crystal Reports designing, Overnight downloads, etc. There is actually very little strain on it most of the time. I imagine you could use it for the other things that you mention. And as Wendy suggests (although Epicor does not recommend) you can run your web server on the Vantage server in a pinch. Wendy mentions a performance issue, but I found that issue to be the same when running longer 'compiled' reports as well - that is bogged Vantage way down, so I don't know that having the Web Component on the Vantage server would inhibit performance terribly much. Most of our reports take under 10 seconds to retrieve data and refresh the report on the Web browser.

Todd,
Believe me when I say that once you do give up distributed reports and
get to using Crystal Web reporting, I don't think you will regret it.
We're
using an older 450mhz PC with Windows NT 4.0 installed on it so hardware
was
not expensive. With some support from the group, you could get the Web
server up and running in a day. After that, distributing reports is so
much
easier in my experience. It's easier to modify reports, easier to get
them
to the user(s), and easier to manage the organization of reports.

Though a crystal web server may make the server side a little more complex
before, the web layer is MUCH, MUCH less complex than deploying reports and
their associated DLL's to every workstation that uses them. It makes your
tasks simpler than before.

We plan on purchasing crystal 9 Advanced, and using it with Visual Studio
.NET and the Progress Appserver and Open Client.

Progress Appserver and Open Client - Automatically generates proxy's for
progress programs, which can be called from Visual Studio .NET applications.
Will convert a temp table generated by a progress query into an ADO
recordset, and vice versus Why not use ODBC? well, why limit myself to SQL
statements with limited joins, when I could use less processor speed, less
memory, and have much greater flexibility and reliability using the native
4GL? Plus, when we finally get a database update license, we'll be able to
update the DB using progress routines rather than through the back door
using SQL92.

Visual Studio .NET - Makes it easy to deploy powerful front ends, desktop
and web based, no more dll hell. I looked into webspeed and provision, but
MS seems to still have the edge as far as user interface design goes. I've
been evaluating .NET for some time now, and am quite impressed. It has a
version of Crystal built in, but

Crystal 9 Advanced - Has better support for XML, and ADO.NET. Costs quite a
bit more than the previous releases, but has quite a bit more flexibility,
and will integrate quite nicely with Visual Studio .NET.

Of course, I will need to continue using crystal 8.5 to modify vantage
crystal forms, which is working fine so far on our current Vantage 3.0
installation.

I'll keep y'all posted as soon as I start playing with my new toys...

I'd venture to guess that the performance issues mainly result from the use

install
on
8.5 (no menu option is created to activate the wizard). Notes from
the
CR
web site suggest it is an obsolete feature no longer supported and
actually
discouraged. The alternative is web services which requires extra
hardware
and software (a web server) and a lot more work than installing a few
distributed reports for selected people. I am not looking forward at
all
to
being forced to give this up.

So is there an alternative to compiled reports or has that feature
been
lost. It was nice to be able to have a stand alone report, it covered
some
holes in functionality. If not is there Ebook instruction on creating
the
8.5 flavor of compiled reports.
