I've just loaded Crystal Reports 8.5 and I'm having problems connecting to
the Vantage database. I understand that it might be an OBDC driver problem.
Can anybody point me in the right direction?

Me Too !.

We're still on Vantage 3.0 but the ODBC API, should work the
same. I just want to know how you install it, or turn it on, or downLoad
it, or find it, or see it even.

error message comes up... when does it come up... etc.

I just spoke to Vantage support regarding hardware/software
requirements for 5.0, and he suggested we NOT go with CR 8.5 for
now. He said they have a lot of bugs in it yet.

I guess I need some help in setting up the OBDC driver. When I try to log
onto Progress, the first error message is " [MERANT][OBDC PROGRESS
Driver]msgOpen: unable to open message file:PROMSGS." The second error
message comes up when I try to continue the log on: "[MERANT][OBDC PROGRESS
Driver]PROGRESS error returned with no associated message: RC= -1,
SQLCODE= -1, SQLSTATE= ""."

I'm not sure what settings I should be using as I haven't set up anything
like this before. The OBDC we're using is MERANT 3.60 32 bit PROGRESS, and
Vantage is version 4.0. The database is on the network.

The PROMSGS error is usually related to settings in the autoexec.bat file on
the client workstation. Be sure there are NO references to any previous
version of Vantage in the autoexec.bat file (or to the previous mapped drive
for the older version of Vantage). Here are the SET statements that we use
for our Clients - using Merant 3.5 ODBC drivers.
N is the Mapped Drive where the Vantage folder is located, in our case.


SET DLC=N:\PROGRESS
SET IDLC=N:\PROGRESS\
SET PROMSGS=N:\PROGRESS\PROMSGS
SET IPROMSGS=N:\PROGRESS\PROMSGS
SET PROCFG=N:\PROGRESS\progress.cfg

Supposedly, SeaGate allows "backdating" software, so a legit 8.5 license
allows you to run anything prior. But you have to order it directly from them.

You can have my old copy of 8.0 (just kidding). I'm on CR 8.5 and it's working fine. There are some patches and fixes out there - some are on the egroups files list (see link at bottom of this email). I wish there were a list of steps to help CR 8.5 work. One step includes changing some .dll files, but I'd get in trouble if I told you which ones they were, because I'm not sure. Another is a patch from Seageat for CR 8.5. Epicor will have to get this situation in sink - especially if CR 8.0 is no longer available.

Also, for the record, I don't think there are 'bugs' per sey in CR 8.5. It's the fact that for Vantage Crystal Reports (that come with Vantage 5.0), they use older CR 8.0 .dll's instead of the newer ones that come with CR 8.5. Getting the 8.0 .dll's and the 8.5 .dll's to match is the trick.

We purchased 8.5 developer edition upgrade and a $25 downgrade to 8.0
directly from Seagate.

You can purchase 8.5 from anyone, but the downgrade can only be purchased
from seagate direct.
