Cycle Count Period Definition

Is it possible to create a cycle count schedule ranging outside of just one year? For example, looking to create a cycle count schedule that ranges from April 2025 to March 2026 but I keep getting an error saying Period Start and Period End must be within the Period Year.

I don’t believe there is a way to do that. Can I ask what the benefit of such a long single Cycle Count period would be? Using that, it seems like you would run into issues pulling the Part Selection for any ABC codes with a period less than a year.

remember that when you do a selection into a cycle, that a part can only exist in that cycle one time… so if the goal is to count your A items 4 times per year, it will not work. You would need to have at least 4 cycles to work that out.

  1. you set the cycle length
  2. you select the items into the cycle
  3. a part can only exist in the cycle one time.

Some companies want to count their A items 12 times per year, and in order to do that, you would need to have 12 cycles.

ORIGINALLY the design for periods was “fixed” to be monthly and the all started on the 1st and ended on the last day of the month. We flexed that in the design for Kinetic to allow you to choose the cycle start/end and length…

SOME companies have utilzied this to their benefit and created 2 week long cycles, which supports up to 24 counts per year.

Thank you for clarifying, Tim. That’s what I was getting at when I mentioned issues performing the Part Selection.

A common mistake that people make when “Experimenting” with Cycle Counting is that they setup their cycles in monthly cycles… then they perform the selection of the first month, the second month, and the third month… then they wonder why they dont have any parts selected in the 4th month… the problem is that they haven’t finished the experiment, and closed out the first month.
The cycle should be:

  1. create the period
  2. select the parts for the period
  3. Initialize the count for the day
  4. COUNT THE PARTS DAILY
  5. POST DAILY.
  6. at the end of teh period, start over.

Note that once you POST, it releases the parts to be selected for the next period.

Here is my woolpool slide on the cycle counting process… note the colors… RED is the initial setup. BLUE you do once per period (monthly) and GREEN is done daily. Also note that you do NOT have to have cycle day 1 completly posted before starting on day 2… you might have some discrepencies remaining in recount, but that is ok. you can be doing your recount for day 1 at the same time as the count for day 2 is going on… same for day 3, and so-on.

Thank you Timothy. This is very helpful! We haven’t really dug in to the full cycle count process within Epicor, so this is all new. I appreciate your help.
