Index is a Relational Database term. The quick and easy way to describe it
is that it is how the data is sorted. By using an index to retrieve your
data it speeds up the time it takes to find it. Think of it like a telephone
book. If you were to open the phone book to find someone's number and you
weren't sure of their name, but you knew that their number was 555-1212. you
could spend all day looking for the number. However if it were also sorted
by number you could find it a lot faster. Same way with indexes. It just
provides the database with another way to find the right data. Someone else
may give you a better explanation, but I hope this clarifies it.
