Database size

Elizabeth, your table sizes seem normal to me. Parttran, Labordtl, Gljrndtl, Gljrnsrc and Chglog are the biggest for us too.

Is this normal for E9, or is there some way I can slow down the rate of increase here?

Everyone,

Our database is approaching 2GB in size, and I seem to recall something
about this being a bad thing. We are on Vantage 5.2.325. Is this
something I need to be concerned about, or am I just over-worrying?

Any help?

The 2GB size limit.

yes if you don't have Large Files enabled, vantage will cease to run. You have two choices, you can make it a multi-? database or enable Large Files. Check with support for the documents on what to do. (I just upgraded to 6.1 as it automatically enabled large files in the upgrade - according to the install documents).

9.04.507A SQL

On 1/1/2011, we went live on E9 with a database size of about 4G. This had been brought over from a non-Epicor ERP system via DMT.

In the 19 months since, our database has grown to almost 30G (yeah, thirty gigabytes). The only tables that look a little wacky are GLJRNDTL (2.2G Data Size, 7.0G Reserved) and TRANGLC (1.5 Data, 5.1 Reserved).

CHGLOG is only 114M. The only other table over 1G (data size) is JOBOPER, with LABORDTL closing fast.

PARTTRAN and PATCHFLD both have Reserved sizes over a gig, but Data sizes less than half the Reserved.

Is this normal for E9, or is there some way I can slow down the rate of increase here?

I struggled with this for some time. I work with one company that has a 5GB progress database. I work with another that has the same amount of data and the db is 35GB. It seemed wrong, although there was nothing terribly out of place in the SQL tables. Nothing skewed it that far.

I finally reached a person in tech support (a progress believer) at Epicor that seemed familiar with the question and said it is standard for a SQL database to be 5-10 times larger than a progress database.

Ernie,
Where I worked before (we started on 8.03 and moved to 9.05 later), in the first few years the growth of the DB didn't seem to make much sense. In the first year, the DB grew in size exponentially and the next year, not so much, plus in the next year we absorbed a second entire company too.
size is usually directly related to transactions and how the DB is used. For instance if your company is running COS/WIP and capturing every day or week, you will post more transactions than if it's done monthly.
In our case, we found that our LbrDtl, PartTran & TranGLC was growing fast because we had a lot of Operations in our methods and we were backflushing everything. (PartTran & TranGLC usually go hand in hand, but TranGLC will create the most records because it is where all your GL transactions are posted... every... single ... one).
So on Labor reporting & backflushing:

If I have 10 Mtls related to each of 10 operations and on each operation the operator only completes 10 on average a day and reports qty every two parts (2 per skid), this means that each report qty would generate 11 PartTran transactions and 1 LbrDtl transaction. If the job was for making 10 parts, then in this example, when finished, I would at least have 50 LbrDtl and at least 500 Backflush PartTran records + the 5 MFG-STK transactions... that's for one job. Once these are captured, those all hit TranGLC too.

Something that may help is that in 9.04 or 9.05, not sure when it came out, they added a Database Purge & Summarize option under Main Menu > System Management > Utilities. Take a look at that, it might help to reduce your DB size... however, I wouldn't run anything like this unless you ok it with your accounting department and others who have a vested interest in the data this may purge & summarize. I would think it would be a good policy for everyone to agree to a schedule for this to be ran... perhaps after each year end close all the Labor & Job elements can be purged and summarize, or perhaps everything that is older than X months or years. Either way it is a really big deal, but it could tame your DB size issue... over time.

Other than that, I believe it normal for a new DB to grow quickly in the first 2yrs, but it then seems to slow down, in my experience. Besides, storage is cheap... right?
