Db cleanup attempt

We are on Vantage 5.2 and our datbase is about the size of yours. We were
havinging unreal performance problems, which we quickly blamed on our
network and on the old server. It was taking 8 minutes to delete an invoice
etc. We sent our database in (ftp took hours) and Vantage checked it out.
They said our scatter factor on the database was not good and suggested a
"dump and load" of the database, plus a re-index.

They sent us instructions which actually moved us from a multi-extents 4K
block database to a new 8K block database with only one file to hold the
data. This took most of the weekend to make happen, but was well worth it.
Our users thought we had gotten a new server because the database is so fast
now.

Xp-pros to Win98 120 MHz. We are noticing the system running slower
everyday. Hopes of an upgrade are a ways away, maybe within a year
(need new hardware). My question is: if we inactivated old
customers and part numbers, would that speed the system up at all?

I just purchased 5 used Dell servers - 2500's and 2550's ...

Dual 1 GHz proc
2 gig RAM
4x18 ( 2550's) or 3x36 ( 2500's ) SCSI drives with RAID controllers

No warranty - Std Dell lifetime support

$ 1,179 for the 2550's and $ 1,358 for the 2500's ( 2500's included 20/40
DDS4 tape drives )

Are you sure your company can't afford to spend $ 1,200-1,400 on a new
server?

I don't know how many servers you currently have but if you buy one more
server and -just- move Vantage on to it I would think you would see a huge
improvement in speed.

I didn't buy used because I have a love affair with used gear ... but it
came down to 1 "New" server vs. 5 "Used" servers. I'd much rather spread
things out over 5 servers then cram everything onto 1.

You could also consider a database purge and summarize to get rid of old
file that you can do without. It would serve to save space and improve
performance.

How many active parts do you have? How many are thinking about inactivating?

Generally, this will have no impact on system performance.
