FW: Custom programming for 5.1 - Was 5.1 released too soon?

Thanks for the clarification, Tim. I assumed with the delays in the patches for 5.1 (it had been several weeks since a key patch in 5.0 for MRP was applied to 5.1 - the patch became available yesterday for 5.1) that 5.1 was not a priority yet. We are actually excited to go to 5.1 when the time is right as there are some good features there.

Troy,

You've got things a bit confused. 5.1 is definitely of high priority and
getting fixes to major issues out as soon as possible is our goal.
As you can see from the 5.1 readme many issues have been fixed exclusively
for 5.1 as it is the current GA release of Vantage.

While the patches that will be put out for 5.0 grow fewer and fewer, only
very high, business critical issues will even be considered for fixing in
5.00. I personally do not see 5.00 patches continuing much longer, but that
is just my opinon.

As part of procedure, anything fixed in 5.00 is also fixed in 5.10 as well
with very little effort on the part of the development staff because they
have already identified the issue and worked out a correction, the coding
portion of this process can be and most often is very minimal.

As part of our normal procedure, we accumulate fixes until we have a fair
amount to deliver and then cutoff a patch for that particular version.
So the patch release process for a fix in both versions may lag up to a few
days due to the fact that each patch has to go through a QA process to get
released.

5.1 was not released prematurely. If you have followed the 5.1 release you
know that it was pushed back a bit in terms of its GA date. It is now
commercially available and rightfully so. There are no current plans to make
any schema changes to the database. I am a member of the Vantage Core Team I
would be the first to tell you of any that were upcoming.

I've seen Custom Programming's response and previously releases of Vantage
in the past. Basically, they are stating that you can go to 5.1 whenever you
like, but because of the "unknown" they can only provide 3 patch upgrades on
a non-billable basis.

I will state that in my own personal opinion, the 5.1 alpha and beta program
has been one of the cleanest programs that I have been involved with.

Britt,
One thing I learned on this subject is that any bug fixes to 5.0 will
also have to be applied to 5.1. 5.0 is still going through some
changes. So programmers will have to do double-duty on each fix they
make in 5.0 and do the fix in 5.1 as well. At this point in time 5.0 is
still the priority, so fixes to 5.1 will have a lag time. What should
probably concern more people is when will 5.0 stop getting fixed? There
are still a slew of folks getting ready to go to 5.0 right now.
I also noticed that in the "5.1Readme.wri" file, there are fixes in 5.1
that you won't ever see in 5.0. The list is quite long.

We were planning to go to 5.1 mid-October. I requested a quote from
Custom Programming for the conversion of all our custom programs. This
is part of their response:

"Because you will be upgrading before we recommend, and knowing there
will be
multiple patches released in the first quarter, we will only provide 3
patch
upgrades and any patch upgrades required after that will be billable on
a
time and materials basis. If you would like to hold off upgrading until

after the first of the year, then we will not charge you for any patch
upgrades required."

What is going on? Was 5.1 released way too soon just like 5.0? They
had never before warned us about upcomming patches affecting our custom
programs.

They MUST be anticipating some major changes to 5.1 (or bug fixes).
I don't think we will be upgrading till the first quarter!
