FW: OT: Strange Computer Happenings

Happened here, too. The user never visited a porn site. Spybot fixed the
problem, but I had to run it twice.

sounds like you might have some spy wear software installed that is causing
this to happen. I had this problem also and I used a "free" software call
spybot to find and delete the intruding programs. www.spybot.com
I have had no problems since then.

I am hoping someone on the list might be able to point us in the right
direction to clean up a computer problem one of our users is having on his
laptop. Any time his computer is booted up, after a while a program kicks
in and automatically changes his preferred browser and through that new
browser, will log him onto, shall we say, a less than desirable site. If he
clicks on it to close it out, it blasts in 10-30 more sites immediately.
The only way to stop them is to end task for all of them. This will happen
even if the user is not currently active in his browser. If he is on a site
at the time, it will kick him off of that site. If he is not even connected
to the internet with the cable, it still will open the new browser and try
to log onto the internet. I think whatever blocking software he has can now
identify and block some of the sites, but we have not been able to find how
the browser is getting changed.

Has anyone had any experience in getting rid of such a thing?

Another thing to check on the suspect computer is the host file.
Generally C:\winnt\system32\drivers\etc\host clean out all of the
unnecessary entries and make it read- only. I have found hundreds in some
computers giving them access to the computer.
