[OT] Downloading from Internet (on Win2K Pro PC)

I'm a Linux user at home and I'd switch workstation too if I wasn't in such
a Windows environment. It seems that the average user is sucked in by nifty
search features or pretty little smiley guys, etc that are targeted at
windows.

I use Mozilla Firefox as my browser and find I have few problems, Firefox
rules.
Sort of OT but this does affect downloading from Vantage Support or YahooGroup files....

Whenever I try to download anything to my desktop PC I receive an error that the site is unavailable and to try later. But if I go into computer room (or to any other PC) I can download just fine. I have double checked all the security settings in IE and it all seems OK (same as elsewhere). Any idea what else can be affecting downloads? I can browse to webs sites just fine but I can't even download from our own web site (hosted elsewhere). Mostly just an inconvenience to not be able to do it from my desk but if there is a simple reason I'd love to know what it is.

Thanks,
Todd Caughey

My first "guess" would be spy/adware problem. Try running adaware or spybot.
Also make sure your virus defs are up to date.
Other than that, is there a policy in place that would prevent downloads?

Good Luck,
Jim Moore

Hi Todd,

I have the same problem with my own workstation. But I know our T1 isn't
working correctly, so that's part of it. Still, it's my desktop that's got
problems - sometimes - when others seem fine. I'm sure it's because of all
the different kinds of things I end up doing from my workstation. I hammer
my resources pretty good sometimes. Seems OK right now... but there's
always tomorrow. If I learn anything on this, I'll let you know.

Thanks Jim & Gary,
I have two spybot programs on my PC (Spybot S&D and another) and run them regularly. Our Symantec Corporate AV is updated at least weekly (more if I run a manual update to the server for hot new bugs).

I do also hammer my PC. Loaded with just about everything possible to run around here plus a bunch of development tools. It does get abused. On the otherhand my PC has far fewer problems than some users who run almost nothing (some people jsut have bad electrical aura I guess). This problem seems very much like some sort of DNS problem specific to downloads.

I think I will try a Windows-Update and/or IE update (if available). I probably corrupted some DLL sometime.

Thanks again,
-Todd

Todd,
Double check your IE security settings. I know you said you did, but under
Tools > Options > Security there are radio buttons that allow you to
enable/disable downloads.

You could always wipe your workstation and start over.... I can hear you
gritting your teeth from here. Or is that me? With all the junk I have
loaded on mine, I've been putting off upgrading my 733MHz workstation. I
really don't want to have to think about installing all that again.

Todd,

Under: Tools - Internet Options - Privacy - Edit... There is a list of
blocked sites that gets added to when you answer one of those dumb wizards
when you're trying to do a download. Answer it the wrong way and your site
ends up blocked. I had to remove one of those yesterday. Try looking
there. Most are ad sites, but occasionally a good site gets in there.

Thanks for the tip on sbybot.

One of our guy's computers was hosed and I used sbybot to clean it up. It
only had 66 adware items and several other helper programs I had to squash.
Now it works.

Thanks

Edward,

Spybot is a great program but I would also run a program called Adaware.
Spybot and Adaware, both are very good programs but both have holes.

Spybot finds things that Adaware doesn't, and vice versa.
I have personally seen this happen several times.

Another program is CWShedder, CWS stands for "Cool Web Search".
Cool Web represents a large group of Spy/Adware/Malware programs loaded on your PC without your knowledge.
The Cool Web group of malware is NOT found or repaired by either Spybot or Adaware packages.
As a matter of fact, some of the Cool Web software is so bad, it will actually mess with your browser, making it impossible to get to the antispyware web sites.

And some more - Hijackthis, is a tool used when your browser's home page is being redirected without your consent.
(usually to multiple porn sites)

CWShredder and Hijackthis can be found though
http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/

www.spywareinfo.com is a good site to try if your PC is having odd problems that just can't be explained.

And if you have extra time, and want to find out how bad these Malware people are, just read about the different versions of CWS.
This link, lists most of the CWS programs and all the evil, mean and dirty things that this malware does.
http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/cwschronicles.html

Good Luck
Rich

Rich,

You explained exactly what was happening to this machine. By using the
tools on spybot I was able to delete the registry entries for this junk.

I have even had to tell the president to lay off the free junk. Every loads
up on free junkware and then they wonder why their machine doesn't work.

Thanks again.
Ed,

A word of warning......
A bunch of this junk is not just from free software.
It is loaded from regular web pages with ActiveX or Java.
(This includes people who use email programs with preview panes like Outlook/Outlook Express, with the preview pane turned on.)

So the next time you see a pop up window or you previewed your email you potentially just had Spy/Ad/Mal ware loaded on your PC.

Geez I'm sounding paranoid.

Rich
