Thanks to all in the group that responded. I now have more information to take to the boss.

Sorry of the off topic question

We are investigating switching from dial-up internet service to something faster. Can someone give me a quick run down of what the various types are. For instance, what does DSL stand for?

Thank you

DSL - DIGITAL SUBSCRIBER LINE - This requires you to be a certain distance
from the hub for good high speed service. If you are much past 5 miles
forget it. Advantage cheap, disadvantage - you are pushing signals through
50 year old wires, expect signal dropouts, and if you have downloaders in
the neighborhood they can suck out some performance.

Satellite - Two way satellite - One way satellite - reasonable choices if
you done have any high volume- Disadvantage - FAPPING (Fair Access Policy -
169 Meg an hour - exceed that and your speed drops to less than a modem. So
you can maybe do a Microsoft update on one machine a day. Performance
generally is good to very good.

Cable - (RoadRunner if you can) By far the best choice most cable companies
turn the tap wide open. Few drop outs. (If you have a good cable company
you have very good service, bad cable company lousy service)

Dedicated T1 - T2 -T3 - A geeks wet dream. Very expensive but counterparts
will look upon you with awe.

We put in a T1 here and use it for phone and internet. To save money we
only pay for fractional bandwidth (256k.) The good news is it is not
expensive and our phone bill is a fraction of what it used to be.

We use ChoiceOne, see www.choiceonecom.com

We have a wireless connection
We went from a Frame Relay (Cost us $750 a month) Which was not even
close to T1 speeds
To our current setup of a wireless connection for $145 a month!
And its 1,000 times faster
We can ever buy more bandwith if needed

Good luck

One other consideration for the various methods is ISP support and availability of static IP address(es). If you will host your own web site or have a mail server then the domain's DNS info will need to point at a specific IP address. Some cable services can't provide a specific or unchanging address. Also connection monitoring is a valuable service. Our ISP will (on the rare occurances) notify me of a line outage on our T1 before anyone here notices it.

Shirley,

I have used Direcpc (Direcway) at home for several years. In talking to
support last month they said they do not count Windows Update downloads
against the FAP. This was talking to them about a home system though, not
the business solution.

I got mad at Direcway and cancelled both work and home connections. I'm on
cable for both now and am satisfied with the service. I still have the both
the One way and Two way dishes I'd like to get rid of. So if anybody wants
a deal write me off list.

Mel,

We had a DSL here but since we were on the very edge of the the radius
(22000 air miles) from the hub - the connection was no better than my dial
up.

We switch to a Fractional T1 line that includes our phones as well. We
actually saved a lot of money by making this switch. We use allegiance
telecom. They are actually running a promotion in PA.
