Whoa nelly! Ok so I unchecked the box for now. Can anyone else confirm this to be the impact of that checkbox or if there is some other circumstance that would create the above use case? I can do a customization in a BPM or something I'm sure but I was hoping to avoid it if I could.
We are finding that some invoices in our sales journal do not have legal numbers but have invoice numbers. We do some reporting from the GL by customer territory and I need those legal numbers to get my back through Invoice Head to customer since Invoice Num isn't available. Any ideas what drives that field being filled in or not?
It is set in your company setup under Modules/Finance/AR under the checkbox "legal numbers required for AR Invoices and Credit Memos"

No it is not, good call! Up until now I'm assuming this has been pulling in automatically. I don't think our AR person would have been typing these in since we don't use them other than just for this reporting situation. If I change that will it just start yelling at her if they don't pull in? What is the purpose for them in otherwise?
Legal numbers are a requirement in some European markets. They will automatically update using the invoice number so it will not require anything more of your accounting person if you check that box

Perfect! Thank you so much for your help this will be a great fix for this issue we are having. Usually they're not this easy :)
I thought you should only turn on legal numbers if you have to - once you have it turned on you have to track every number. That means voiding a number instead of deleting an invoice from a group and getting shipments if you make changes (we run into this occasionally). Checking the box is easy - dealing with the new functionality after you check it may be more difficult.
Perhaps there are other ways to get at that invoice number rather than implementing legal numbers?
