Kinetic Report Style Maintenance and Downloading/Uploading Reports

First of all, I do realize this is a bit of a “who moved my cheese” moment…

However, I have to say that very much dislike how the new Kinetic version of Report Style Maintenance works when downloading/uploading reports.

I’m not JUST whining but also hoping I overlooked something somewhere and someone can set me straight.

Why has the upload/download of simple XML based RDL files turned into a zip file upload/download? It can’t be a bandwidth issue. Is this due to the browser first technology?

You can’t edit the files directly from within the zip files. So you need to extract them and then modify them. Then you have to copy the modified file back into the correct folder in the zip file or create a new zip file with the appropriate file structure and add your file to that. Then Upload again and test.

That’s a lot of steps to go through every time you want to test a report change. Sure, before we also had to do the Download/Upload, but at least the folder structures were created and maintained.

What am I missing? Is this actually an improvement somehow and I’m completely missing it somewhere or is it just something that has to change due to being browser based and the restrictions on file management related to that?

I’m hoping that they intend to build the functionality that existed in classic into the edge agent.

Here’s hoping. For the time being, I have noped my way out of the Kinetic form and back to Classic.

I don’t have any additional perspective on the matter but I’ve also just made sure to default that form to classic so I can continue to use the upload/download as I always had. I’m also hoping someone else has figured out a cool trick or has some positive news on the horizon.

This is a wild :peach: guess but it may be the handling of multiple files for RDLs. :person_shrugging: A lot of web-based services will zip the results into a single download if there are more than one file.

Since this is a development concern, I would recommend voting for @josecgomez’s idea of a VS Code extension, which could do this download into a folder. Modifying RDL (XML) directly isn’t always a good solution but it would add source control to SSRS and handle the up/downloads and we sould still use Report Builder.
