we run a fairly basic configuration like I expect many companies do, where we have retail plants and manufacturing plants, has anyone accomplished being able to create a configurator part based on the rules defined in a manufacturing plant, then transfer the part back to the retail site for distribution?
it sounds like a simple task however where we create a transfer suggestion we’re not sure how to get configurator to select/push through the operations of the manufacturing plant
anyone achieving something like this relatively hands free?
We have a fairly simple configurator used at time of sales order entry. It works fine for shipping from the plant where the order entry is done, but is problematic for shipping from our other plant. So, we behind the scenes make an upper level part/job to sell, and it has this configured part in its bom. It is transferred via transfer order from the manufacturing plant. It is not hands free I’m sorry to say. We have been disappointed in the limitations of the configurator, it really seems made for single plant company.
the big challenge is that configured items are also typically make direct items. And that starts another problem in that make direct is not transferable as a stocked item.
It is possible (with alot of work in the configurator) to force things to happen, but the things that need to happen are:
the configured parts must be changed to a stock item once configured
the order must be adjusted to Ship from stock, and to ship from the correct location
the new configured part must be added to both sites, and the shipping (non-mfg) site needs to have the partPlant record marked as a TRANSFERED item so that the part is moved from MFG site to the Shipping site.
all of the above is not an easy ask. the configurator design is to be Make Direct, and for the order to be shipped from the site that made it.
