Mfg. to Stock vs. Ship from WIP

I believe what we are doing here is at the end of the job scrap all of the overrun. The original job and the parts sold from WIP absorb all of the costs from the closed job. The overrun parts that get put into stock are "received" and valued at zero cost. I think this has something to do with the doubtful nature of being able to sell them so they really have no value. So corrections I guess are not an issue. Then when (or if) a customer calls and wants more and the overrun stock is usable it has a wonderful margin. ;) We recently started tracking the overrun stock in Vantage so that Customer Service people could see it. Just incase the customer calls and says a forklift ran over five pieces and asks how fast can we make some more.

Todd,

From what your saying I am assuming that if we are currently making a lot of
corrections to data collection when those parts hit stock (mfg.-stock
environment) inventory values will not be correct.

In a ship from WIP environment we have the ability to make corrections
before receiving over runs from manufacturing.

Am I correct in my interpretation?

For 5 years now (even pre-Vantage) I have tried to get a project going to
prove the benefits of shipping from stock. We ship well over 99% from WIP.
To be sure there are financial downsides (like getitng stuck with inventory,
as well as capital tied up) but there are many pluses. Our delivery
performance would be a lot more stable. Shop scheduling would be smoother
(less impacted by customer rush deliveries). Setups of machines would be
fewer. Quality tracking would be tighter during the process as parts flow
from one oper to another. Costs would all be in and visible at invoicing
time rather than waiting for job to close - often months later - to see
profitability. Engineers might have better views of cost before reorders
come in versus now where they are guessing on quoted costs versus actual.

On the other hand customers just don't always cooperate and either eant
stuff sooner or later than ordered, sometimes go out of business and never
take the parts and even make rev. level changes without gaurantees they well
take the ones already made. Stuff liek this makes being in manufacturing so
much fun!

Hi Group!

Another question for the knowledge tree!

90%+ of our Jobs are currently linked to sales orders and shipped from WIP.
Only a small percentage are manufactured to stock and shipped from stock.

There is a push here to manufacture all jobs to stock and ship from stock
rather than WIP.

What are the advantage and disadvantage of Ship from WIP vs. Manufacture to
and ship from stock?

I think my sales staff would have a stroke on ship from stock since there
wouldn't be a job link to the order to track.

Your valued opinions are appreciated.

Well our biggest reason is trailing costs ... if it comes from manufacturing then the cost accumulated all month are included in cost of sales if they are posted to stock once it is posted any cost after that hits variances... we use the original work order as out lot # so we can see tracability for all parts from each work order so the cost is out biggest reason.
