I had a network switch go bad on me this week. We were using a Symantec
200r VPN/Firewall

Network Interfaces: Eight 10/100 BaseT Switched Ethernet LAN Ports 200Mbps
Throughput (Full Duplex) Two 10BaseT WAN Ports 8Mbps bi-directional
throughput

Which worked well for us. In a pinch we purchased a netgear FVS318 from
our local store (we only paid $60.00) We are not happy with this at all.
I have been searching for a new one but I can't seem to find any mid price
switches. I paid 820.00 for the Symantec.

What is everyone else using or any suggestions?

Have a Nice Day,

That's one of my favorite "big corporation buyout" pet peeves. That unit,
and lots of other good ones were made by a company called
Nexland. Probably sold for about $250. Companies and other prospective
customers seemed to think it was too inexpensive to be any good (what with
Cisco and SonicWall prices.) Symantec bought them out, painted the boxes
yellow instead of purple, and tripled the price. Apparently they did well
after that.

We have a Nexland ISB Pro-800. You can sometimes find them on Ebay for
cheap. But Nexland is no more and Symantec's support for them is sketchy.

If you're not adverse to something a little more complex than an
"appliance" type box, there's IPCop. http://www.ipcop.org/ Open source
freeware based on Linux that comes as a completely configured bootable CD
you can run on PC hardware. Haven't used it personally, but heard lots of
good reviews.

From their web site:
"IPCop Linux is a complete Linux Distribution whose sole purpose is to
protect the networks it is installed on. By implementing existing
technology, outstanding new technology and secure programming practices
IPCop is the Linux Distribution for those wanting to keep their
computers/networks safe. "The Bad Packets Stop Here!" "

For firewalls I would also highly recommend Fortigate's Fortinet firewalls.

For the price the entry level models ( 50, 60, 100 ) are just plain hard to
beat.

Tons of functionality and VPN in these boxes. All models run the same
software.

One of the Vantage consultants on the list sells these boxes and if you are
interested just post a msg and ask for them to contact you ----off list----
for details.

I was using the F100 at my last job and after I left the company they
outsourced the IT function to a local computer company that has always sold
CISCO. I talked to the tech who went in and he said it took him about 5
minutes to figure out the GUI interface on the F100.
