Off Topic: Best solution for 1 of 2 divisions moving

Michael,

You got me there. I thought by OS you meant "out of state". "overseas" is
a little different. I don't know what to tell you, except that you should
be able to tell from what was said in the group here, that they don't give a
fig about customer support - so you can guess how they probably feel about
taking care of non-customers.

I'm trying to fix the same problem with our web email provider (they had
spam go out on one of their servers) - most servers are accepting our email
again, but a few still haven't got the message.

Good luck!
Gary

Talking of Ameritech, can anyone suggest a way of getting in contact with
their technical support to resolve a problem I have connecting to their mail
server. I would prefer not to make an OS phone call.

When our mail server tries to connect we get :-
421 Connection refused from <our_ip_address>

I have done some testing and it is only this one address that seems to get
blocked. The story from the previous administrator is that our company sent
a virus to some Ameritech subscribers many years ago and we got our address
blocked.

I have tried sending mail to postmaster@..., but I think these
just go to /dev/nul. At the moment the person we need to send to uses
hotmail to get around the problem. I've even considered getting my fixed-IP
changed to get around the problem. I have also tried faxing and leaving a
message on their web page.

Thanks

Been there. What they did to me is too much to get into here (and involves
a lot of profanity). By the way, I'll bet you didn't know that the word
"Ameritech" is directly derived from a word used by the Indians living in
the Ohio Valley during the early 1800's to describe children of settlers
playing with two tin cans and a string. The indians believed the process
drained the participant's life-force. Prophetic, no?

Good luck with Ameritech. We got great pricing on a T-1, but Ameritech.net
is the only game in town if you want an ISP to go with that great pricing.
Of course you get gouged using them for an ISP. Other ISP's are cheaper but
they have to go to Ameritech for the T-1 and can't get the good price.
Amazing how that works isn't it.

I would use two tin cans and a string before I depended on Ameritech. If
they had competition in Ohio they would be out of business in a month.

Without knowing all of your needs I think you should check into thin clients
and Terminal Services. Very low bandwidth requirements for each terminal,
little to know maintenance, low investment.
Its working really great for us.

By the way, for anyone in the market, I came across a vendor and product
that I am really pleased with. The company is called Televideo. They make
all in one thin clients with built in LCD touch screens that can be mounted
on a wall. There stand alone thin clients work great as well. The stand
alone models all work with ELO or Microtouch. Sales and Tech support all
seem to be above average.
Just wanted to share a value with anyone using thin clients.
Thanks
Jeremy

Hello again. I've read many of your ideas on this subjectin the
past, but never thought it would be an issue here. Here's the
scenario... We have 2 divisions within 100' of eachother, so
currently we have Vantage on the NT server at division 1.(The NT
server is 600MHz w/ dual processor and there is a Novell 4.11 server,
we use NDS for NT to admin from Novell). Division 2 is attached with
underground fiber and hubs to the LAN. With Vantage (5.00.329) we
use Company Maintenance to seperate them as 2 different companies.
You should also know that we only use dialups for internet and have
no firewall on the network.

There is a possibility that one of the divisions will be moving to
another location 2-3 miles away. I will be calling Epicor to find
out what our licensing options are if we decide to seperate it into 2
LANs running Vantage on each. Any input there would be great, but
what I'm really picking your brain for is T1 and similar options,
especially being that close to eachother, and no exceptionally high
buildings in between that I am aware of. Speed issues, hardware and
software suggestions, wireless options and things to be aware of in
general through your knowledge and experience. Thank you so much!!

Ann,

I have a plant 10 miles from my primary location connected via a T-1.

Vantage + DB running at primary.

At remote I have a small server ( read 200mhz desktop PC running
NT-Srv-V4-SP6A ). On this remote server I have a copy of the Progress and
Vantage directories.

We use 2 VTG files. One is on the primary location server running Vantage
and specifies that the DB and the Progress and Vantage code are on the same
server.

At the remote I have a second VTG file ( plus Vantage.ini ) that state that
the DB is located "Across" the T-1 but the Progress and Vantage code is
located on the remote server.

Speed is ok for 5-10 people. Startup time is in the 1-2 minute range while
it's about 20 sec on the primary location. Once started speed is not an
issue.

T-1 across town is about $ 425 for us - ONLY - because one facility is in
Ameritech land while the other is in Verizon land ( by about 300 yards ).
Otherwise the cost would have been in the $ 250/month range.

If that's the total price - both ISP and Ameritech, it's got my attention.
We're planning linking two company sites (Rochester Hills MI and Milan OH)
with T1. What's your geographical location? We're in North-central Ohio
(Ameritech-GTE land).

If that's the total price - both ISP and Ameritech, it's got my attention.
We're planning linking two company sites (Rochester Hills MI and Milan OH)
with T1. What's your geographical location? We're in North-central Ohio
(Ameritech-GTE land).

I don't know much about wireless networking, but a pair of
Lucent ROR-1000 Outdoor Routers ($1000) might do the trick. IF the range
really is 16 miles, you might be able to get away with just one

http://www.cdw.com/shop/products/default.asp?EDC=290425.

Of course, I have no Idea what kind of licensing if any is required to use
such a long range wireless device, and if local wireless ISP's would
interfere.

If that's the total price - both ISP and Ameritech, it's got my attention.
We're planning linking two company sites (Rochester Hills MI and Milan OH)
with T1. What's your geographical location? We're in North-central Ohio
(Ameritech-GTE land).

Full.

I also got a quote recently on a full T-1 to the internet at about $
500/month.

Prices continue to drop at an amazing rate ...

Prophetic, no?

there is also the ORINOCO OR-500 PT-2-PT RADIO BACKBONE KIT available for
around $2000.

It seems the outdoor routers are more tailored for ISP use, but this device
is tailored for connecting two sites, with a range of up to 6 miles.

Does anyone here have experience using Lucent or other wireless devices to
connect two sites or give employees remote access to the company network?
We are strongly considering such technologies.

I don't know much about wireless networking, but a pair of
Lucent ROR-1000 Outdoor Routers ($1000) might do the trick. IF the range
really is 16 miles, you might be able to get away with just one

http://www.cdw.com/shop/products/default.asp?EDC=290425.

Of course, I have no Idea what kind of licensing if any is required to use
such a long range wireless device, and if local wireless ISP's would
interfere.

Northern Illinois ... Rockford ...

T-1 to the Internet - preliminary quote was from Norlight. I'd also check
Worldcom - they have recently cut their prices ... a bunch.

For Worldcom - try Ryan Petersen - ryan.petersen@...
<mailto:ryan.petersen@...>

For Norlight - Try Michael Lauterbach - <mailto:MLauterbach@...>
MLauterbach@...

Ameritech CAN be somewhat competitive - but only when pushed and frequently
you can get better pricing from other companies because Amertech's pricing
is bound by tarriffs ( published in books about 5 feet thick ).

Don't let their first round pricing scare you. You have to play these
companies back and forth for a few rounds to get "Final" pricing.

Good luck

If that's the total price - both ISP and Ameritech, it's got my attention.
We're planning linking two company sites (Rochester Hills MI and Milan OH)
with T1. What's your geographical location? We're in North-central Ohio
(Ameritech-GTE land).

Full.

I also got a quote recently on a full T-1 to the internet at about $
500/month.

Prices continue to drop at an amazing rate ...

Todd,

Is that $250 for a partial T1?
