Off Topic: Certifications to Customers

I created our certs in the report footer on the Vantage pick list report. I
conditionally formatted the report footer to only print when customer I.D =
( I used an array to supply the ID's of the 1/2 dozen customers who require
certs) and also to print on separate page.. I did something similar for
C.O.D customer except there I filter on a user defined field on the customer
master. We have numerous COD customer with multiple line sales orders that
we ship a lot of partial shipments on. This eliminates the need to perform
the credit release function before / after every shipment.

More and more of our customers are requiring certifications (certs)
with their shipments. The requirements of the cert vary based on the
part that is being shipped. We were wondering how other companies
are handling this issue. Are you adding certs to the bottom of
packing slips, if so, how are you customizing the type of cert? We
currently type the cert on a preprinted form adding the necessary
references.

WPI designed a generic form within word that works for any of our customers
requirements. Our admin people fill in the appropriate information and
print them - it is not tied into Vantage at all (other than we use the
scheduled shipments report to communicate to them what is shipping that
day). They are trained to know what documents must accompany the cert per
the specific customer requirement. HTH

We spent the time and money to build a custom module in Vantage that builds
and prints our certs (metal chemistry and mechanical test results). This
works out well for us since its fully integrated with Vantage and certs are
a crucial part of what we do (in most cases, we can't ship the product
without the cert and the certs are fairly complex).

To get a fully integrated module like this, you'll need to spend some
serious bucks on either the Progress programming tools and a good
programmer, or having someone else build it for you. Either way, its bound
to be pretty expensive to build an integrated solution. You just have to
figure out how important it is to have the full integration.

What works well for us is a form created in word. We set it up so that the
shipping manager can fill out any varible date. We use the Vantage document
control system to make the individual certs available per part. We've
applied this method to all kinds of part specific items. We even have
matching Workcenters set up in the part master so machine specific documents
are imediately available.

We wrote an RB report, which is run based on the packing slip number. It
prints the part number, qty, ship to info, and customer PO#. It's a generic
format that satisfies most of our customers. For those special ones we just
type the info in the appropriate customer cert.

Would you be willing to post a copy of that to the group files? I have a cert solution on my 'To Do' list and this would be a great start!
