(off topic) misbehaving on the Internet

Wendy,
There are some Internet Service Providers out there that you can subscribe to for a minimal fee that filter everything for you. That way, the filtering is not done on the computer, but at the ISP level. I could look into that if that seems a better alternative to filtering software. Added benefit, as Shirley says, it doesn't mess up other settings on your computer.

I have an interesting question that some of you may have had to deal with at home. What software or other ways have you used to prevent your "youngsters" from accessing inappropriate sights on the Internet? The owner of the company that I work for had me stop by her house yesterday to review the sites that her son visits. The only preventative measures I thought of was to install some sort of software that prevents installation/removal of any software/programs and then use the "content" feature of Internet Explorer. How has anyone else dealt with this and what 3rd party software did you use? The computer that she has at home has Windows ME on it. I'm not too familiar with this OS yet. Is there a feature in ME that would work to prevent this instead of other software?

Thanks!

Hi Wendy,
I've installed ME on my systems at home. Basically, ME is an enhanced
WIN98, nice, stable, ok, but still just an Enhanced Win98. Its best claim
to fame is the recovery feature that lets you "go back" if you really really
really screw up your machine. It works, its usefull and I like it. As to
parental controls, there really isn't much on ME. If you are on a home
network, WINGATE, works great for control. Its just like a little NT
server, easy to use, and gives good parental control. For a standalone, try
something like NETSPY, or a program like that. Netspy will permit access
ONLY to predefined websites, track all the key strokes and window openings
in a written log. There are a bunch or programs out there for parental
controls. But the honest truth is the BEST parental controls are the
parents themselves.

*** Information Dispatch -
McAfee.com Launches McAfee.com Kids ***

March 28, 2001

Friends,

I'd like to take this opportunity to write to you about a
subject that is very important to me, and one that I
suspect is of growing concern to you: The dangers our
children face on the Internet.

Because you have subscribed to the McAfee.com Dispatch,
I know that you are already concerned about the risks on
the Web. One danger that's often overlooked, however, is
the safety of our family members while surfing the Web.

In response to this, McAfee.com is launching a new
micro-site called "McAfee.com Kids." Click here to view now:
-> http://kids.mcafee.com/

This site is dedicated to educating parents, teachers and
our young people about the dangers of the Internet and how
to avoid them. With the help of partners such as nationally
recognized child-psychologist Dr. Larry Kutner, Internet
safety expert and founder of SafetyEd, Colin Hatcher, and
social learning software leader Ripple Effects, we have
created a resource for you to find the information you need
when it comes to your family's safety online. The site will
continue to grow over the coming months as we add resources
and activities that help kids to learn.

In addition, McAfee.com offers the Privacy Service to help
protect young people while on the Internet. The service will
allow you to manage what Web sites your children can see
online, view activity logs, set online time limits, block
emails, and monitor online chat room activity. The service
will also prevent personal information, like your name and
credit card numbers, from being transmitted over the Web
without your permission.

In honor of the "McAfee.com Kids" launch, I'd like to make
you the special offer of Privacy Service at a discounted
rate of $19.95 for a 1-year subscription.
-> http://clinic.mcafee.com/clinic/ibuy/campaign.asp?cid=2192

Remember, the Internet is a wonderful tool-both a source of
entertainment and education - but there are inherent dangers
as well. As a fellow parent, I implore you to be aware of
what your children are doing on the Internet, and to protect
your family.

Sincerely,

Srivats Sampath

Shirley, Carlos, and Jeff, thanks for the suggestions! I'm curious though,
her son is quite smart. If I were to get some sort of snooping software,
what if he were to uninstall it or uninstall Internet Explorer and reinstall

BTW, I did suggest that she put the computer in a more public place in the
household that way it helps to discourage things a bit.

With When What Where, it tracks any application, keystroke, etc.... And it
can be hidden. Here's some output from the program. It's much easier to read

helps.

I use Norton Internet Security (now Norton Personal Firewal with a family
version) and aside from the firewall features it has some parental control
functions. I have not used it to block sites but it has a really great site
logging feature that is password protected in admin mode and logs every page
URL visited. Back when my kids were minors I tracked where they visited and
they could not erase the log as they could the browser history, cookies and
temp files ( a trick they learned real fast). As long as they knew I was
watching there was no intentional misbehaving. Came in real handy to link
into old Bolt chat threads and monitor the conversations for signs of
lurking adults. You can try to block sites all you want but it is a losing
battle. The best packages still miss 10% and often block far more useful
sites. Site logging and monitoring puts the control in your hands.

Netspy is independent of IE5, and my experience shows, (I've used it here at
work) is that Netspy is obstinate enough that gee without that password, IE
5 doesnt work anymore after reinstall until its redefined in the Netspy
