OT - MS Exchange Licensing?

"If anyone knows of a good basic Spreadsheet/Word Processing combo (not all the bells & whistles of Office) that is compatible with Office file (.doc and .xls) formats I might be very interested it looking at it. "

Sun's StarOffice Suite (5.2) is able to import and Export Office 2000, including Word, Excel and Access. And it's free. (www.staroffice.com).

I agree. This seems to be the case for most of the MS licenses. I had to
buy 3 seats of Office a few weeks ago and was told Office-2000 can no longer
be sold. When I told our CDW rep I did not want to run XP (or Office-2002)
"yet" she said it was OK to load and run 2000 as long as we had the XP
licenses. But read the EULA (if you can make any sense of it) just in case.

Not to open a can of worms on this thread but I am also becoming
increasingly dismayed at the new Office upgrade/EVA/Open Licensing Agreement
changes. I am being told by CDW that we have until October 1 to upgrade to
XP after which there will no longer be any way to upgrade from Office-2000
and before. After Oct. 1 it is full price only from then on. Also, they
are strongly urging buying the upgrade with the 2 yr maintenance plan where
you can install any new releases for 2 years. All this means that;
- we either freeze at 2000 and hope we never have to upgrade
or we face re-buying our 30+ copies for $15,000
or we upgrade for about $5,000 every two years.
The last item being an expense I definitely did not budget for and the
timing could not be worse.

If anyone knows of a good basic Spreadsheet/Word Processing combo (not all
the bells & whistles of Office) that is compatible with Office file (.doc
and .xls) formats I might be very interested it looking at it. I wonder if
there will be a Works XP version. I am becoming very disenchanted with
Microsoft and I have always been a fan of their products.

No expert, but you can purchase the Exchange 2000 license and a Windows 2000
Server license, install Exchange 5.5 and Nt Server 4.0 then migrate up to
2000 for no additional cost. When I installed my last server, I had to
purchase Win 2000 Server. I am not ready to migrate to a 2000 network at
this time. I consulted Microsoft and they said as long as I'm not running
both 2000 and 4.0 (or or in your case, 5.5) at the same time under 1 license
it is legal. Does that make any sense? Or is my Friday brain not

We are looking at adding an Exchange server to our
network, and bring our email services in house. The question that I have is
about Exchange 2000. Our reseller is saying that Exchange 5.5 is not
available any
longer, and that we can purchase Exch. 2000 and install 5.5. That would be
fine, but when we are ready to go to Windows/Exchange 2000, does that mean
we would have to pay to ugrade, or because we had already bought the
Exchange 2000 and the number of CALs we need, could we just migrate when we
are ready to do that? Anyone out there a Microsoft Licensing Expert (if
there
is such a thing)? Thanks, and have a great Weekend.

Thanks Todd, but you are right... what a can of worms. I am dealing with
this issue myself right now..where to go with Office. THen on top of that
Windows XP is scheduled for release this fall I think. So we are being hit
with Office upgrades and Operating Systems. If any one has any suggestions
I would like to hear them ... on or off the list. Though I think we all are
going to be dealing with this.

I personally use office 2000. I have been a supporter of Microsoft for a
long time. These new licensing requirements are punitive.
I've been considering Star Office. Supposed to be 100% compatible with MS
Office at the file level. I think it is put out by Sun Microsystems but I'm
not sure. I do know the price. It's F R E E . That's right. No bucks.
No maintenance contract ( sorry epicore). No commitment (sorry Bill G.)

Also, they
are strongly urging buying the upgrade with the 2 yr maintenance plan where
you can install any new releases for 2 years. All this means that;
- we either freeze at 2000 and hope we never have to upgrade
or we face re-buying our 30+ copies for $15,000
or we upgrade for about $5,000 every two years.

Or is my Friday brain not
communicating.

And I wonder how much of the usual upgrade mania we let our selves in for automatically? I don't think I'll even figure out most of the new features in Office 2000 by the time Office 3000 (or whatever) is out next.

Old farts like me are drawn back to the era of the new car each year excitement (not that you could afford it) to see what cool new features there were. However, these new things were stuff like a heater, 8 track player, floor shifter, etc.

I just don't see (right now anyway) how many different ways for me/us to use the Web features built into Word and Excel.

The next upgrade better include a word processor or spreadsheet that does the work for me so I don't even have to do any work...

Funny, I just had this same conversation with our software source on
Wednesday. My understanding is that after Oct 1, if you haven't bought the
upgrade "insurance" there will be no upgrades, you will have to buy new each
time. As far as I'm concerned, we'll be using Office 2000 until hell
freezes over. And who are two of the three richest men in the world?
Forbes says Bill Gates and his partner! Of course, they have to pay their
legal bills for the anti-trust lawsuit, so I guess we shouldn't be surprised
that they are raising prices nearly 30% AND making sure we can't just build
on what we've had before. Sounds like the same thing that happens when
people get hooked on drugs, doesn't it?

At least with cars, you can buy a used one or last year's model and get a
legal registration for it!

Sorry, I guess it is "Friday venting"--I'll get over it.

Here in California we can just conserve energy and go back to pencils and
candles! EEEEKKK!!!
