Options for handling bench stock

Thanks for the info and I agree. I've created a VB form to add the info
in the Engineering Workbench to keep the items off the BOM. I'll modify
the Traveler to include the information so the information is on the
floor.

For hardware (and your glue, etc.), I think companies have migrated to
having a sub-contractor fill their bins and removing the parts from
their Vantage inventory. Also the hardware would be removed from the
BOM. The shop floor guys would use the drawing as the guide to which
bolt to use where and it would be up to them to do the correct thing.
In short, hardware has always been a problem and is now considered a
consumable (make the problem go away or give it to someone else to
manage!)

As for wire and all other things bought on a reel in bulk and issued in
feet, inches, etc. we are now moving these items to a location outside
of the inventory area and allowing the worker to come get it and report
any discrepancies between the job traveler and reality. That way we can
feed info that back to engineering to make the changes for the current
job (job entry) and the future (Advanced BOM).

Any way you slice it, hardware is not fun to deal with. The guy on the
shop floor wants the correct parts and upper management and the
accountants want the problem to disappear since hardware has such little
physical cost. But if you don't have it, that can stop production in
its tracks, so what do you do?

My company is currently implementing Vantage 6.1. It is very helpful
reading through the messages because it is improving my knowledge of the
system!

We are looking at different options for how to handle our bench stock
(screws, washers, etc.) and bulk issue items (wire, glue, etc.) . Here
are some facts:

We currently list all items in our BOM
Bench stock items go straight from receiving to Bench Stock (items are
expensed)
Bulk issue items are issued from stock to the floor and used as needed
All other parts go from receiving to inspection to stock then issued to
the floor via pick lists
We do physical inventory every quarter since we don't have perpetual
inventory system
We don't count bench stock items during physical inventory

The problem we see is if we put bench stock and bulk issue items in our
BOM, then we are going to have to manage those items for our finances
and count the items during cycle counts which we don't want to do. We
are considering putting bench stock and bulk issue items in part master
or operation comments so they will show up on the traveler, but was
wondering how others handle these items. Any info would be appreciated.

Butch
