Consumable items

Some ideas:

Create a seperate warehouse for consumables.

Make each item non-netable.

Don't bother with issueing anything.

When reordering an item, do one adjustment to zero.

Just my 2 cents...

Subject: [Vantage] consumable items

Scope of Problem

Consumable items such as drill bits, paper, sanding belts, toilet paper,
ect... are received into Inventory. At some point they are physically
picked up by people who require them (Custodial personnel, Tool Crib
Manager, office personnel) and used. These items are not connected to a
job
so a Quantity Adjustment is done in Vantage to reflect these items being
used. This doesn't always happen, in fact our past performance is pretty
bad on these items.

Is there a better way of handling these items than having to do Quantity
Adjustments every time we issue paper?

Not sure which version of Vantage you're on (and I'm still new to Vantage)
but there's a non-computer way that I have seen frequently. It's just a
simple reorder card/ticket/sticky-note. Calculate the quantity that triggers
a reorder for that item and place the reorder card on that box/container or
at the bottom of the bin. When the ticket comes up while consuming the
material, it is dropped into purchasing's inbox. It also helps to write a
number on each container so that they are used in order (FIFO usually) so
the reorder tag doesn't come up too early.

It works well and it doesn't kill your Vantage session. ;-)

We do much the same thing, however they get adjusted out in batches. We can
ID these item by part number format from the inventory report. then once a
month accounting adjusts them out as an expense for that month.
the actual inventory is monitored out side of the Vantage world.

If you are not actually tracking them why are they in inventory? Why not
just received them against a PO, charge them to overhead when received, and
let the responsible personnel keep track of the reorder point and issue a PO
requisition. You then monitor usage at the requisition point prior to PO
issuance.

Another option for MRO or consumable items is a two bin system. You can
establish a primary bin (drawer, cabinet, etc.) that you do your normal
issues from. Then calculate your reorder point (your normal demand over
lead time plus some safety stock) and place that in a secondary
location. When the primary location is empty and you need to issue from
the secondary one, you move the total quantity from the secondary
location into the primary and then that is your trigger to reorder. You
can keep track of the inventory inside Vantage but the physical
existence of the secondary bin gives you an insurance policy for when
transactions don't always take place.
