Your ISP's DNS could be down. I liked Todd's answers but I don't
think they apply to dial-up. Winsock gets the DNS address when it
initiates the connection. I would call the ISP for advise. If they're
having a problem they should let you know then.

I connect via dial up to my ISP. I open IE 6.1 and it
errors out with DNS errors. What can I do to fix this?
WHy is it erroring out?
.
Two things I've seen do this.

1. No DNS server entry in the network properties. Or the DNS server listed is wrong or not available. Or if I recall correctly there is a setting for searching for a DNS server which should pick the ISP's automatically.

2. IE is trying to use a proxy server when there is none or it is wrong. Or, on a PC that formerly connected via proxy server even if IE has that turned off there may still be a proxy service running. Check install/uninstall programs and see if a proxy program is listed and uninstall it if not needed anymore.

Something to try might be to try to access a site directly by the IP address. For www.msn.com it would be 207.68.171.245. See if you can connect without using a DNS server to resolve the IP address by typing that IP into the address line. At least then you would know the rest of the connection is working or not.
