If you have outlook and have your journal on it will tell you where this
file is.

I've lost a spreadsheet that I spent almost a full day developing. I've
searched in every location (local, network, zip backups, etc.) and using
every method I could think of (title, recent, date modified, etc.) This
workbook had several worksheets within it and my last hope before
starting over is to do a search on a worksheet name within a workbook.
Is this even possible? I'm hoping I saved the file in some bizarre
location using some strange name and can find it using a worksheet name.

Please, someone, make my day!!!

In Excel XP, under tools/options/save tab, you have the option to specify
an autosave feature. Also how often the program saves to this file.
You might get lucky and find your document there.
For example, my setting is c:\documents and settings\username\application
data\microsoft\excel.

Marty,

The only thing I can think of is:

In Excel -
Click On Open
On the tools menu click find
Specify the search criteria - there is an extensive list to choose from.
Then click add to list.

Then search away.

I hope this helps.

Dina

P.S. I am assuming you looked under documents (start - documents) to see what the last documents we have accessed) - Just another thought that might help you.

If you were just working on it, the file should be in Excel's recent file
list no?

Thanks to those who responded, but no luck. I worked on it late last week and it's not in recent, not in my default location, not anywhere using any of the Excel or W2K
search tools. I even opened up all of the recent files just in case it was under one of those names. In fact, I opened up every Excel file that had a modified date within
the last two weeks. That was fun!

I can't believe I didn't save it while I was working on it or ignored Excel's warning about saving it before I exited Excel, but all evidence suggests that is exactly what
happened.

The last question is do I drink coffee and get started or do I go to the liquor cabinet and.....

Thanks again,

Make sure it's just not hidden. If the file opens but is blank that may be
the problem. Happened to a user here.

Good Luck.

Jim,
Do you have any mapped drives on your system. I beat my users about the
head and shoulders for not saving their documents to the network drive.
(Everybody has a secure folder on the server) Maybe it went there. Also,
(just in case you havent tried this) go to START, SEARCH, set your search
parameters to "search for files folders "*.xls" then in the field below
enter a text word or phrase that you KNOW is in your spreadsheet. Then
search EVERYTHING, all your drives and any mapped drives. It might take a
little time but I've found every lost document that wasnt deleted. Another
thought, is it possible you saved it in a format that is NOT .XLS. If so do
the same search as above except without the "*.xls"

Maybe the file extension got changed from XLS to something else? I would do
a search for *all* files modified in the last couple of days and see if
there are any that are the right size to have been your file.

Brian
Marty,

If you know some of the text that would be specific to that file, enter that
in the "Containing Text" box in explorer search. Also - you may have
entered a control character into the name somehow that caused it not to
show. Again, search with "containing text". Good luck.
