OT: Exchange 2000 Backups

Todd,

Do you manually run EXMERGE at the end of the day to backup your
mailboxes?

Lori,

We are running Exchange-2000 on NT-4 servers.

I use the EXMERGE utility daily at 6 pm to export PST files for every
mailbox. ( set for a complete dump every 3 days ( 1 hr ) and
incrementals the other 2 days ( 3 min ) )

I also use the built in NT backup on another server to backup the
complete Exchange information store AND the PST files.

It may sound like overkill but I have found that:

* The built in NT backup does not allow you to restore an individual
mailbox / email ... Having the exported PST file does allow me to do
this.

* Exporting the PST files is all fine and dandy but they do not contain
the "Setup" of Exchange - ie the user accounts / mailboxes and any
restrictions you may have tweaked over time.

* I have Arcserv with the Exchange plug in ( 2000 version ) ... In
theory you can restore an individual mailbox. However, I would highly
recommend that if you are going this route that you seriously scan CA's
website for ALL required patches. The 2000 and previous versions were
noted for having serious problems during restores. Like restoring one
mailbox corrupting the entire Exchange config. You might want to test
this carefully. Also, Arcserv-V9 is supposed to be much better then
previous versions but I have not had a chance to test it.

Ok, that's about 3 cents worth ... good luck!

For those of you using Exchange 2000, what method do you use to backup
Exchange? Windows 2000 Backup? Backup Exec? I am looking for something
easy but yet reliable.

Thanks,

Lori

ARCSERVE 2000, with bricklevel backup. I can recover someone's inbox if needed without recovering the entire exchange server.

Don't forget about the ExMerge utility from Microsoft:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;174197

It will take your information store and extract all your mailboxes as
pst files. Then you can back up onto tape.
