OT - no longer receiving email

Yes that is right.
I have found the problem. I have SMTP for Gateways running inside
ISA. I did not have the Microsoft SMTP disabled. When I rebooted
that server this morning, Micosoft grabbed the port before SMTP
could. Therefore, no mail could pass through the SMTP server.

Exchange 5.5 on NT server behind ISA firewall. For no apparent
reason exchange is not able to receive any email today. This is the
error being received. Not sure what could have changed or why but

This is just something to check.

Open up your internet mail service , connection tab

Check that you are accept connections from any host.

Restart your mail connector and see if you start getting e-mail. The ISA
firewall is a routing device and you need to accept mail from it.

I tried what you suggested. Accept from any host is checked.
Starting and restarting the connector did not get it going. Any
other ideas?

I'd like any clues on this as well. I am getting reports that selected customers can not reach specific people here and they are receiving the same message at their end. I am sort of suspecting that some sending sites are infected with a bug that is trying to relay through our server and we have relaying turned off. But that is just a wild guess at the moment. Most of our email is getting through fine. We're using Exchange 2000.

Any more clues would be appreciated here too.

Todd C,

The problem you are having might be the e-mail 'reply to' name. The users
that are not reachable check the default internet mail address. I have seen
this problem if the default is set to the local domain and not the internet
domain. I have had to check a different default, the select the correct
default for that to work.

Lois, I am still looking up some notes to see what happened to you. I am
thinking it is on your ISA server (maybe the SMTP published?)

We had an issue here. Check that Intermet mail services are running.Then
using Exchange Administrator, look under the domain
Name/Configuration/connections. select Internet Mail Service/Properties.
Take a look at the queues. We had an issue as a result of some serious spam
where the inbound conversion log was filled. Caused big problems..

I'd like any clues on this as well. I am getting reports that selected
customers can not reach specific people here and they are receiving the same
message at their end. I am sort of suspecting that some sending sites are
infected with a bug that is trying to relay through our server and we have
relaying turned off. But that is just a wild guess at the moment. Most of
our email is getting through fine. We're using Exchange 2000.

Any more clues would be appreciated here too.

Ok lets look at the event log on the server. Look for yellow and red and let
me know the event ID. Check both the isa and exchange. I am still trying to
remember the isa config.

Lois,

If I try to send mail to you I get a 550 5.7.1 unable to relay message. My
log on the server just says the message failed. I sent to a bogus address
(unless gwbush is a user on your system) and received the same bounce and
the same entry in the log file.

I had a similar problem with a couple of accounts here (on a different mail
server) and I discoverd the AV software quarantined the mailbox in question.
I deleted that account and added it back to get it going again.
