(OT) Outlook removing .exe files

I've attempted to install Exchange 2000 3 times and it bombed every time.
Think I will be staying with 5.5 until there is a really good reason not to.

Microsoft has released a simple simple for all their Outlook security
releases!!!! Its called Exchange Server 2000 and can be yours for the
trivial price $6,486.97 (25 users). Oh you have 50 users? you only have to
spend an addtitional $5,409.38. (CDW prices)

But shouldn't they allow other e-mail server developers to serve trusts to
outlook clients? Shouldn't they allow Admins to determine security settings
at the workstation level, instead of requiring the purchase of Exchange? No
way. Then they'd be compromising their efforts to remain the forefront in
Homeland Security.

http://www.theregister.co.uk/content/4/25130.html

I guess its good that they've taken it upon themselves to decrease security
vuln's, but it would be nice if the left the IT administrator the option of
putting enterprise virus protection entirely on the shoulders of non-MS Anti
Virus programs, rather than taking it upon themselves to eliminate the
option of deploying exe files over an intranet, or the option of running
programs that automatically send e-mails (thank God for
http://www.express-soft.com/mailmate/clickyes.html)

But then again, all these nuisances are drastically mitigated if you
purchase Exchange Server.....

Rather than send out multiple copies of an .exe file to multiple users, you
could just e-mail them the location of the file on your intranet. This
approach would reduce memory and bandwidth useage on the exchange server,
though possibly requiring additional steps in the installation process.

I sent a virus patch to all users this morning and all but two were able to

I see under Tools, Options, Security, there is a button marked attachment
security. It seems to be an all or nothing type setting though. Have a look
and see if that fits your needs.

I have a document from MS about Customizing the Outlook 98/2000 E-mail
Security Update. The URL at the bottom of the page is:
www.microsoft.com/office/ork/2000/journ/outsecupdate.htm
<http://www.microsoft.com/office/ork/2000/journ/outsecupdate.htm>
maybe this will help shed some light on it (I hope the link still works).
Personally I have been trying to get this to work to do exactly as you are
experiencing.

That is a function of the Outlook e-mail Security Patch. If implemented in an Exchange
environment it can be configured to strip a user definable list of file extensions. When not in
an Exchange environment it uses a pre-defined list of file extensions as defined by Microsoft.
If you applied this patch that is why it is block access.

There is a work around that I have used before. If you receive a e-mail with
a blocked attachment in outlook you can import that e-mail into outlook
express and then have access to it. It's kind of a pain but that way you
don't have to turn down your security and you know what the file is before
it can cause any harm if it where a virus.

Oh yeah I forgot to mention the file is still there, Outlook just won't let
you have it. That's why you can import it to Outlook express.
