OT: Preventing Users from Changing Settings

Windows XP Pro has a built in GP Tool for Workgroup computers
(gpedit.mmc), this page has some helpful information on how to use this
tool on the station: http://www.theeldergeek.com/gp04.htm

But using the policy mmc snap-in, you can edit the appropriate settings
of the user, just as you would in a Domain env. The difference is that
the settings will be applied only to that one station, but by creating a
template, you may save that template and copy it to another workstation
as you please. Exploring the MS Knowlegde Base will point you to helpful
policy settings that can be imported to the station and expand
functionality.

The Policy MMC Snap-in will allow you to edit the local computer policy
by default, if you ever move to a AD enviornment, by joining the
computer to the AD, the local settings that have been changed on a
domain level will be overridden, although, the settings that do not
overlap and have been changed locally, will stay in effect, so it is
strongly suggested, that before you make any changes to the settings,
that you create a backup copy of the default template, so that you may
return to the initial settings at any time.

Does anyone know a good program for preventing my shop floor users from
deleting icons, moving the taskbar, accessing the internet, moving icons
around on the desktop, etc.?

I remember seeing this in student computer labs. They would restrict
everything but the few programs you actually needed to use.

Thanks!

Ben,

If all your shop floor machines are running W2K or later and you are
running W2K server or later with active directory you can enable
mandatory profiles that will lock down the desktop and prevent the users
from making any changes.

A lot of it can be done through windows system policy settings. If you are
using a domain-based network (as opposed to a work-group based network) this
is a lot easier, however. I assume you are on a workgroup network, since
you are asking the question.

For windows XP / 2000, click Start, Run and type "gpedit.msc" - this will
load the global system policies editor. Note: Any changes you make here are
system wide, meaning they affect all users for that computer. So if you
lock things down really tight, you could potentially lock yourself out as
well. The best thing to do is not disable the command prompt, and put a
shortcut on the administrators desktop to the command prompt. From there
you can open the gpedit.msc snap-in, and disable restrictions if you need to
make changes.

The place you want to be modifying is under "User Configuration",
"Administrative Templates". From there it is pretty self-explanatory. With
some time you can get the system completely locked down.
