[OT] Spam Filter

David,

Our local ISP - ( small company ) provides us with a T-1 Wireless Internet
connection ( 700-800K usually ) for $ 250/month.

For an additional $ 25/month they also:

* Scan all emails for viruses using -3- different anti-virus programs
* Provide Spam Filtering with white list support.

Such a deal ----

At any rate - check with your ISP to see what they provide - you might be
surprised.

We are getting a large amount of spam and just junk mail in general
into our work accounts. Does anyone out there use any spam filters
either hardware and/or software. What is the best route to go with
this. We are running a mail server with Win 2003 and Exchange
2003. Thanks in advance for any help that i get.

We are using Message Labs to scan all email. It blocks spam, virus, and porno. I can't say enough about how happy we are with the servers. Its around $3.00 per mailbox per month. Available in packs of 25 only. It also checks everything going out of your server as well if you choose to set it up that way. One nice thing is you can then block all smtp traffic from your network to the internet and it will keep a user on your network from broadcasting spam or viruses.

David,
We are using Symantec Enterprise Edition 8.6. This includes SMTP
gateway software and antivirus software. It was pretty simple to
install and configure and does a good job of filtering out spam. We
route all e-mail through the SMTP server and from there to the
Exchange server.

Just made a major breakthough (again) on ours. It had been very low rate for awhile then grew. Latest version of ORF has really cut the rate of Spam.

Strategy at this time is:
1. Open Relay Filter (ORF) from Vamsoft - about $99 and an excellent server based filter for Exchange - especially the new 1.5 version with enhanced blacklisting and keyword filtering. Plus it connects to the SpamCop blacklist (and many others) and that alone is currently stopping about 25% of our incoming emails. But the primary test it does is reverse DNS to determine if the "claimed" sender really exists or not.
2. Also using the Exchange services in our Symantec AV but there are bugs in the current version in keyword filtering and i need to isntall 9.0 as soon as possible.
3. Finally...SpamBayes on the clients. I virtually never see spam in my inbox anymore. What little there is goes to a Junk folder.

Lately though I have been intrigued by GFI MailEssentials and MailSecurity due to ability for users to add to a local server based blacklist plus Bayesian analysis like SpamBayes but at the server level. Price seems reasonable for what it does.
