They basically went in and did a find and replace in the GL with every
old chart to the new chart. We provided a spreadsheet that had a column
of the old numbers and a column of the new numbers. The rest they did.

Just as a follow up to this, we used a Progress developer out of
Michigan that helped. The conversion process was mostly painless with
his program to replace & update every GL in the system. It was also
fairly inexpensive. We were pleased and moving on in the new year with
our new GL.

Sorry, can't help you there, then.

If SQL I could offer some suggestions on how to approach this.

I'd suggest calling you CAM. Let them talk to the Advanced Solutions
Group, CSG, etc..... You can't be the first customer in this
predicament.

If there is a way to do such a thing I would sure like to know too. Everyone I've spoken to for several years has said that this can't be done. The G/L accounts are stored in far too many places. The risk of getting database corruption is too high. I'm not sure if even Custom Programming has a condoned (that is "supportable") conversion.

For the above reasons, and because we really need to restructure our CoA, we are anticipating our migraiton to 8.03.4xx will be a reimplementation from scratch with a new CoA and a database empty of transactions. Only a few master tables will be brought in with Service Connect. This is the only way we've found to accomplish a new CoA structure going forward. Besides, it gives us a chance to re-work all the other coding such as for resources and cost centers.

For everyone's fyi, there was a customer who had to go through this
about 4 years ago. Epicor has a custom program to do this. I just
don't remember the name of the program. Ask your CAM or tech support
for this program. Of course this was for version 6.1, I'm sure they can
update it for other versions.

Although GL accounts are used in numerous places, it should not be that hard to find every place that they are used. You can run a BAQ against the data dictionary, export to a csv file, sort the fields in Excel, and go find all the ones that reference the GL account. Having said that, I'm not sure it makes the job you want to attempt any easier. At least you would know the magnitude of the task, if you were to attempt it.

really is a complete rework and leaves very few charts the way they
currently are.

I am not seeing an easy way to do this when it comes to updating all the
system journals and I was hoping someone may have experienced this pain
before that could offer some insight.

Just as a follow up to this, we used a Progress developer out of
Michigan that helped. The conversion process was mostly painless with
his program to replace & update every GL in the system. It was also
fairly inexpensive. We were pleased and moving on in the new year with
our new GL.

Yes, every transaction in the database. This allows us to use the new
numbers on historical transactions.
