Re-using serial numbers in Vantage 8 - how to do?

In my case there is no guarantee that the serial numbers will come back since the job is an offload of my customer
if they have time they will run those serial numbers at their plant

Vantage gurus,

We had parts shipped out with serial numbers generated from Vantage.  Some of these parts were returned so that we could create a new job and rework some of them.  However, we cannot re-ship the reworked parts with the same serial numbers from the “rework” job at least it doesn’t appear that we can in Vantage.  Is there any way around this or is there a best practice for this type of situation????  Please help……

Did you create a RMA for them and receive them back into inventory?  This is what we have to do with all our serialized items.

When we get parts back for rework we create a synthetic part number…  PN_REWORK… if the part number was ABC123 then the new part number would be ABC123_REWORK.

We issue the returned part as a material to the rework traveler.

This way we can ship the same serial number again, but most importantly when we are doing our sales analysis, we can easily distinguish brand new parts over rework parts, the costs are very easy to separate, and reworking the part does not affect the average cost of it.

You cannot use the same serial number on different part numbers.  There is no way to “share” it in that sense.

If you use the actual part number (ABC123) with its serial number, you can use RMA to bring it back into inventory and issue to a job for part number ABC123.  Then create a rework operation on the job.  The original part number is a material item on the job (that is how to costs go back to WIP).

IF you are average cost, then ship it off the job so that it does not update the average cost on the part.  You can also create a rework job like RWK-JOBNUMBER, you have your traceability for original job and reworked parts.

Manasa

If you disposition your RMA to a job and tie your Sales Order to this job – you can ship from a job and it will not affect your average cost.

You can use product group or sales category on the Sales Order and remove them from your sales analysis.

By using a different part number you are losing history on your serial numbers.

Mike,

not sure if you got a reasonable answer to your question about serial number re-assignment.

This has been in the back of my head since I read it,  I have the same situation at my place.
we do offloads for a company which have serial numbers assigned to them, we ship them out and get paid for the operation.
then they ship them back to us for us to machine different operations carrying the same serial numbers we shipped out already.
as you probably know that you can’t assign a serial number that has been shipped out already.
since it is not coming back for rework the RMA method doesn’t work for us.

I have to re-assign the serial numbers to a new job manually.

if you go into serial number assignment, plug in the serial number in question you will see the history on that serial number, you might have multiple parts numbers also so pick the correct part number to display. if you tab down and switch the shipped to WIP then tab down and erase the shipping info then tab down and change the job number to the new one and save you transfer the serial number to the new job. you have not lost the old info. you do have a record in serial number tracker. under the transaction tab it shows all the changes to that serial number attached to that part number.

But what is really hard, is when you want to assign a serial number to a
new job, and the new job is for a different part or has different
options... Then, you might want to look carefully with the financial side
to be sure everything is allright on their side.

I am just throwing out an idea –

Did you ever think about adding a subcontract operation – to ship it to the customer.

Tie the Sales Order to the Job – the trigger for billing would be when the subcontract is sent.

Apply the payment as an Deposit or Advance Billing.

When it comes back in and the job is finished –  ship and bill the balance of the order.
