Releasing Jobs Based On Material Availability

And you also get blue dots indicating the material is to be backflushed

Absolutely right. Green check marks indicate material has been fully issued and the JobMtl detail record has been marked as Issued Complete.

Red & green 'dots' are what don't work (predictors of material availability for open req's).

OP green check marks also work (JobOper.OpComplete has been set to true).

We have also been advised that the material status identifiers within
the job tracker are inreliable, however in 8.03.305K the green ticks
do appear to be meaningful. They indicate that a material has been
kitted complete and they do seem to work!

Have you tried playing around with the multi-level pegging display ?
This seems to be useful in identifying material availability. We are
probably using it for the wrong purpose but it seems to work for
us :o)

I just wish it showed the PO release promised dates as this is a
crucial piece of information for us.

[Non-text portions of this message have been removed]
We found planners WB unreliable (for our process) for this and use a home grown BAQ search to review all jobs in linked order entry/job entry/material/status check/time phase that are due to start in next 'x' days for material availability.

We have hundreds of small jobs being released daily so if a material is going to hit zero within a day, we need to decide which orders get the material (and not let an algorithm make the decisions).

I know of no other canned tool.

Sorry for my previous idiotic post. I deleted it. If you are using
production planners workbench, make sure you are running the
production planning process. It populates the data that production
planner workbench needs.

As for the indicators, you are probably aware of this, but the
wording everyone used was suspect. Green check means it is issued
complete to the job, not that materials are available. If you
purchase materials to inventory, they should be red until they are
received to inventory. Then they should have no status indicator. If
there are no checks on the material, it generally means there is no
shortage, but the material is not issued complete. If you look really
hard, there is actually a legend of all of the little icons in the
help file. It is located in the job tree view topic.

Robert, we are on 403D and I haven't had anyone show me a situation in which it was wrong. Before penning this I released a job in my test database, a job that had red dots on three parts indicating shortages. I mass-issued parts to the job and the green flags showed on all the parts except for the three parts I was short (still red dots). Then I removed material on one of the parts that had been issued complete and the green flag went away and only a clear tag showed (indicating there was sufficient stock on hand to resolve it). Are there scenarios you have seen in which this doesn't work?

I know that our company has had issues when we receipt in materials and
issue them complete, there isn't a green check mark. We have had to go
into the receipt and un-check the issued complete box, save it, hit
refresh, then re-check the box, and then save it again in order for the
green check mark to appear. This seems to happen, though, only when
there is a partial receipt against materials and the balance comes at a
different time.

Pretty straightforward BAQ:

for each JobHead where ( JobHead.TravelerLastPrinted = JobHead.ClosedDate AND JobHead.JobEngineered = True AND JobHead.JobReleased = False AND JobHead.TravelerReadyToPrint = False AND JobHead.JobClosed = False AND JobHead.JobComplete = False AND JobHead.JobFirm = True AND JobHead.StartDate <= TODAY + 10) no-lock , each JobPart where ( ( JobPart.StockQty <> JobHead.ProdQty)) and (JobHead.Company = JobPart.Company and JobHead.JobNum = JobPart.JobNum) no-lock , each JobProd where (JobHead.Company = JobProd.Company and JobHead.JobNum = JobProd.JobNum) no-lock , each OrderRel where ( OrderRel.CheckBox06 = True) and (JobProd.Company = OrderRel.Company and JobProd.OrderNum = OrderRel.OrderNum and JobProd.OrderLine = OrderRel.OrderLine and JobProd.OrderRelNum = OrderRel.OrderRelNum) no-lock by JobHead.StartDate.

Notes:

(1) "JobHead.TravelerLastPrinted = JobHead.ClosedDate" results in only jobs that have never had a traveler printed being returned since ClosedDate & TravelerLastPrinted can only be equal 99.999% of the time when both are null.

(2) We want to look ahead as far as 10 days so "JobHead.StartDate <= TODAY + 10". Change "10" to suit your desires.

(3) This is one of two similar queries. This one is for our make-direct Job assembly area (hence the direct linking of JobProd to OrderRel). The other (not shown) is for our Make to Stock Machine Shop Jobs (producing parts used in our assemblies). If performance needed to be improved, I could remove "JobPart.StockQty <> JobHead.ProdQty" & probably see a slight query time decrease as it becomes unnecessary when JobProd is linked to OrderRel.

If you adapt this BAQ to a predominantly make to stock environment drop OrderRel from the BAQ and you can then rely on StockQty <> ProdQty if you have a need to differentiate make to stock from make to order (or make to another Job).

(4) "JobHead.JobFirm = True" is extra code not neede for this Make Direct Job oriented BAQ - but was lazily left in by me as it is used in the other related BAQ for Make to Stock Jobs. Leave it in or remove it as suits your process needs. (We don't want to see unfirmed MRP jobs in this process as we have another planning process for reviewing, adjusting and scheduling MRP jobs. Only our Stocked Parts are set to use MRP. Make Direct/non-stock assemblies are not set for MRP processing in our environment.)

(5) "OrderRel.CheckBox06 = True" relates to our own internal way of keeping track of whether a not our production control department has reviewed & accurately scheduled/promised a sales order line/rel (and its linked make direct assembly job or, in about 5% max of our 200 new order releases entered daily - best availability of a Stocked part on the customer order has been determined).

Since v8 has no suitable order acknowledgement process, another BAQ exists for determining if OrderRel.CheckBox06 is True for all an order's releases and if an OrderHed checkbox ud field is false - indicating to us order is not yet acknowledged - that OrderHed checkbox is checked, a BAM detects it, and an acknowledgement is autoprinted/faxed.

Displayed columns are:

JobHead.PartNum, JobHead.RevisionNum, JobHead.DrawNum, JobHead.JobNum, JobHead.JobEngineered, JobHead.JobReleased, JobHead.ProdQty, JobPart.StockQty, JobHead.StartDate, JobHead.DueDate, JobHead.ReqDueDate, JobHead.TravelerReadyToPrint, JobHead.TravelerLastPrinted, OrderRel.CheckBox06

(Some of these are lazily included on my part only because they are used in the other BAQ for Make to Stock Jobs... It also results in the 2 Query results being consistent in layout so it is easier on the users who do both types of job review.)

Sort is on JobHead.StartDate (ascending).

We use this BAQ as a search from Job Entry. We then use Job Entry's Material Status Check and (for any job materials where total allocations exceed total o/h) we check timing of questionably available materials via a right click menu launched Time Phase session.

We also have a right click menu launched context linked (through jobnum) order entry session open as, while most of our customers appreciate delivery ASAP (and we will pull in orders/jobs for earlier than promised completion/shipment whenever possible, some have 'no-sooner-than' ship date limits specified or, in the case of international customers or small domestic customers, have set up specific consolidated ship dates (weekly or monthly) to keep transport costs down.

As we have not been live on Vantage long (and came from a legacy system around which we had developed very tight processes over many, many years), we have chosen to start with these rough building blocks and, as we discover what does and does not really work for us in Vantage, either bend the process to fit Vantage's limitations - or take the basic building blocks (like this) and start fine tuning and enhancing them (with coincident customizations or BPMs and/or conversions of BAQ to dashboards, crystal reports or inclusion in trackers.

Hope you find it useful.
