Resource Group Nesting

Is there a way to make a resource group a resource of another resource group?

For example:
RG1: Machine Type1
R1: MachType1A
R2: MachType1B

RG2: Machine Type2
R1: MachType2A
R2: MachType2B

RG3: ALL_MACHINES
R1: Machine Type1 (Group)
R2: Machine Type2 (Group)

If I can’t do this, what options do I have other than creating every resource again into the ‘master’ group? It seems like I may be asking for trouble because the resources are created (not linked) so I cant make duplicates. Any suggestions?

Ultimately, I want to have a nice segregated tree that is easy searchable.

There is a resource collection setup option that will link resource groups.

Resource Groups are linked to job departments ad well.

Also know that changing or adding Resource Groups and Resources could
affect your shop scheduling also.

What is the end result you need?

Brad,

I am looking to implement the smartest/easiest MES setup - to me, that means automating the job selection process as much as possible. In the MES, it requires a resource group to select job, so either A) The employees know the existing group (based on machine tonnage) which seems unfeasible B) There needs to be a resource group that encapsulates all of the machines.

This way - I automate the resource group of ALL MACHINES, the jobs load and I can easily filter (see my filter grid post from earlier) from there. I have everything in place right now to do this… except my group composition (the company has already implemented) doesnt line up with my tactic.

Sorry… more questions…

Are you using the jobs and MES for collecting labor? Or are you doing that
another way?

There is an employee that can be set on the resource group. Then when you
log in to MES the work queue will bring up that resource group.

Start and end activity from the work queue screen.

I am curious how the Collection works - can I use it in lieu of a Group? If not, I don’t think it will help.

The MES will be collecting labor. The issue is that we have many employees that work on many different machines. We could try to standardize it but even at best case, it will still not be always the same.

The goal is that any employee CAN log into any job easily, but by default, based on the machine they log in on, it will show the work for that machine (unless the user manually changes the filter).

Ok… based on your responses…

The resource collection is way to link groups for reporting and such it is
optional and does not replace anything.

With your employees moving around like you say it probably doesn’t make
sense to link one employee to one resource group.

Based on the job department they are in this will determine the default
resource group(s) available.

You could add more job departments to narrow this down further.

You might want to look at the capabilities settings.

Capability Maintenance
Use Capability Maintenance to define capabilities that are available within
your production facility. For example, capabilities could be shearing,
turning, setting, painting, drilling, and so on. The capability is then
associated with resources for scheduling purposes.
Important: The ability to set up Capabilities in the Epicor application is
only available if you have the license for Advanced Planning and Scheduling
installed.

Following is a diagram that illustrates the relationship between
capabilities and resources/resource groups:
