Restore from vantage.bkp

Worked great. I've been wanting to try this for a long time as a means ot
populating the test db without shutting down the live db to use procopy.
Only change was in the prorest command line locaiton for the backup. Ours
was at e:\epicor\backup\backup.1 rather than e:\backup\backup.1. Now I can
package this as a command file and include a reminder to change the company
name to "TEST TEST TEST" in the test db and I will be set to refresh it as
often as the users want.

Thanks to everyone for the help.

Thanks - I was just going to send a question about "where" the restore will
go and if ProRest obeys the "current" directory (cd) location. Now I can
turn off TEST and try it without worrying about hurting the LIVE location.

Yes. I tried to restore using the command line while database was turned
on - the restore command stopped without making the restore. If you have
multiple databases and are restoring only one, be sure to leave the others
running so it won't overwrite them by a typo by accident.

OH, and I also do a "set dlc=e:\epic50\progress" in there too. I'm not sure
what it does, but it was in one of the batch files that epicor supplied so I
have included it as well.

So, Similar to Terry's batch file I have:
e:
cd e:\epic50\vantage\db
set dlc=e:\epic50\progress
path=e:\epic50\progress\bin
prorest vantage e:\backup\backup.1

How do we restore the data from vantage.bkp if anything goes wrong
with the original.
Good question! I am doing just that (live backup to test db) at lunch time
today. When I get it to work I'll let you know. Or if someone else has
good tips then I'll know too. ;)

I do mine from a DOS prompt on the server. Then I have a batch file run the
following:

d:
cd d:\epic50\vantage\db
d:\epic50\progress\bin\prorest vantage.db d:\backup\backup.1

Not as scary as it sounds.

Assuming Vantage 5.0 here although the procedure is the same for 4.0:

Run a command prompt, change directory to epic50\progress\bin, and run the
following command:
prorest <vantage database> <backup file>

So in our, case the line looks like this:
prorest e:\epic50\vantage\db\vantage e:\backup\backup.1

Although, if you are testing to make sure your Vantage backup is good, I
would not suggest restoring over your live database!

We use the same command line as Brian and Terry for our backup batch file. It seemed more simple to me than running the supplied .bat file for some reason.

OH, and I also do a "set dlc=e:\epic50\progress" in there too. I'm not sure
what it does, but it was in one of the batch files that epicor supplied so I
have included it as well.

So, Similar to Terry's batch file I have:
e:
cd e:\epic50\vantage\db
set dlc=e:\epic50\progress
path=e:\epic50\progress\bin
prorest vantage e:\backup\backup.1

Assuming Vantage 5.0 here although the procedure is the same for 4.0:

Run a command prompt, change directory to epic50\progress\bin, and run the
following command:
prorest <vantage database> <backup file>

So in our, case the line looks like this:
prorest e:\epic50\vantage\db\vantage e:\backup\backup.1

Although, if you are testing to make sure your Vantage backup is good, I
would not suggest restoring over your live database!

Yes. I tried to restore using the command line while database was turned
on - the restore command stopped without making the restore. If you have
multiple databases and are restoring only one, be sure to leave the others
running so it won't overwrite them by a typo by accident.

One more question - Do I first need to shut off the target db in Procontrol
as I would if using Procopy?
Thanks,

Thanks - I was just going to send a question about "where" the restore will
go and if ProRest obeys the "current" directory (cd) location. Now I can
turn off TEST and try it without worrying about hurting the LIVE location.
