I guess we get lucky because we have such
good Production Foremen.
All the Priority Dispatch Reports show the
Jobs in due date sequence, and for each Job,
the estimated elapsed time is shown.
When a Job causes a conflict at a Workcenter,
the Foremen know to change the routing for one
or another of the Jobs in order to make it all
fit.
We almost always have more than one asset able
to perform a particular operation, so it all
works out.
Early on we tried using the Global Scheduling,
but we had so many changes and suggestions
happening that we gave it up. It was just making
people nuts. So, rather than move a cot and a hot
plate in next to my desk, we went back to scheduling
Jobs one at a time.
Some statistics on our operation:
75 - 100 new jobs each day.
2 - 5 operations each job.
2/3 of the Jobs have a Flow Time of 48 hours or less.
Approximately 80 Workcenters and 8 or 10 subcontractors.
Almost every day we run parts for one of our customers
on an emergency basis because another vendor has missed
shipment, so we have that kind of thing going on.
In 2004 we probably had to do express shipping 3
or 4 times (across 26,000 lots or so) so our on time
performance is very good.
I think the key for us is that the Production Foremen
are so involved in moving the product through the plant
and that we have more than one way to make the parts.

Thanks, but I don't understand. If you don't global schedule how do you
know if you will have the resources to meet each jobs schedule? From what I
understand, scheduling jobs individually will schedule that job as if
nothing else was running in the shop, so it might give you a schedule you
couldn't really hit b/c of all your other jobs? (Can you tell we are just
starting to use scheduling)

Okey doke, here is how we do it:
Create Job
Lock quantity to shut off suggestions regarding qantity.
Do not lock date, because we want to be prompted when Job might be late.
Schedule the Job individually.
Never, ever on pain of death and dismemberment, run Global Scheduling.
(I made up the part about dismemberment.)

We only issue an actual po's when work is ready so that would work for us.
But, at this point we would take anything!

I'm not sure you really want the PO date to be the trigger, we sometimes
send orders early to notify of pending work arrival or to activate tooling
or process design for new jobs.

Thanks, I'll try doing that, but I was hoping the system would be able to
tell somehow (from sub p/s or PO date or prior op complete date) when
subcontracting started. I'll try tech support and see what they say, I'll
let you guys know if I learn anything new... thanks for all the feedback - I
really appreciate it!

Would checking to LOCK check box on the job after it was scheduled for the
first time work?
This would allow Global Finite Scheduling to reschedule the newly added
jobs.
You may need a procedure like when the PO is created the goto job entry and
lock the schedule.

We global reschedule every day because new jobs are added with shorter lead
times, estimates are off, etc...
But we need our subcontracting to know when it was issued (PO date or sub
pack slip date) and use the lead time from there... does anybody else have
this set-up so that he subcontracting works correctly? I am so confused...

That's pretty much how it works.
Are you doing load leveling or something? Why the reschedule?
You may be able to use the "Lock" check box on the job which keeps it from
being rescheduled by load leveling, etc... Pending what version of vantage
your running and what your trying to accomplish by rescheduling.
Otherwise if your manually forward scheduling each job you could do this
thru the schedule board and use the "Branch - Subsequent Operations Only"

Subject: [Vantage] Scheduling Subcontracting operations
Does anyobyd understand how the system scheduled subcontracting work?
Here's the situation: we are forward scheduling a job that have 5
operations. The 1st operation was completed on 3/15. the 2nd operation is
a subcontract operation and was sent out to vendor on 3/15 with days out of
51 days. When we run vantage schedule, it is showing this job as late and
showing it as being sent out today and coming back 51 days from today. I do
not know how to tell it we already sent this out on 3.15? Thanks for any
help!
