Service Connect

So you have Service connect installed on a separate server.

Are the Web services installed on the vantage server or the service
connect server?

i.e. where do your web methods point to?

Do you have WSE 3 installed on that server?

If you run IIS you should be able to identify the virtual directory used
and hence where the dll's are located.

You could then extract from the MfgSrvsPckg.zip the updated files if you
cant get WSE 3 and hence WS configuration working.

Already tried that...

If I do it on the Vantage server it process without an error, yet
when I go to do a workflow it again flags up the version mismatch.
The documentation tells you to copy the web services directory from
the Vantage server to the Service Connect server - but doesn't tell
you precisely where - so I copied it to Program Files\Epicor Service
Connect. Running ws-config from there gives me "Microsoft Web
Services Enhancements 3.0 does not seem to be installed. Cannot
continue". I believe this is related to a 64 bit windows server
issue, however the server this is running on is 2003 32 bit.

Yes, Service Connect and Vantage are installed on separate win 2003
servers and WSE3 is installed on the Service Connect machine.
The web services are installed on the Vantage server but the service
pack documentation advised copying them on to the Service Connect
server for some reason.
I've just tried reinstalling again and its still failing so I may try
having a look in that zip file next.

I am running Service Connect on 8.03.405a. There should be no need to copy anything from the Vantage Server to the Service Connect folder. This is the method that I used when I upgraded.

1. Installed 8.03.405a Vantage service Pack.

2. Updated Web Services on the Vantage Server using WSConfig.

3. Re-imported Web References on the Service Connect server.

There should not be any other necessary procedures. We also have Service Connect on a different server than Vantage.

Our company is contemplating purchasing this module and we were
wondering what types of ways are other companies using it? Do you find
it to be a helpful tool? Is it easy to work with and setup?

We use Service Connect to capture and process Sales Orders from our web site. We also use it for other various, less detailed, process. We have also used it to do mass updates to tables for various things; buyer code changes based on vendor, etc.

I would not say that SC is easy to set up or learn. It is not that bad to work with once you have learned it though. I would not attempt to learn it on my own. I have been a programmer for well over 20 years and I found it well worth the cost of having the consultant come in a teach me how to use it. I could have learned it on my own but it would have taken me a lot longer than 3 days. The consultant only covers the basics but it is just enough to get you started in the right direction.

The learning curve is sharp. The flexibility and usefulness are there.
Finding someone to develop, manage and modify Service Connect workflows
is another story.

We have it and I hate it. Plus, it's not very fast.

It *is* accurate, however.

If you are a SQL customer, you can do everything Service Connect can do
plus more and within an environment that is more familiar to the IT
industry. Meaning, finding a SQL developer/admin is MUCH easier than
finding his/her equivalent in the Service Connect world.

I don't like it.

The only reason we have Service Connect is due to our bolt-on PLM
offering from Epicor. PLM uses *both* MS BizTalk *and* Service Connect.
PITA Yet, both the PLM database and our Vantage database are SQL. I
guess it made too much sense to sync the database and bidirectionally
transfer data via native SQL. :-/

So now, when I create a PLM part in Vantage SQL, it gets exported to XML
via Service Connect and MS BizTalk imports the XML in to the PLM SQL
database.

Lori,

I use ServiceConnect quite a bit, and have to say its the one thing
that does indeed live up to the pre-sales hype. In fact, I would
struggle to be without it.

Typically its going to allow you to programmatically access the
underlying webservices ( or business logic objects ) that actually
make Vantage tick. This is not so much about interfering with their
functionality, but instead its going to allow you to automate
operations ( or groups of operations ) within Vantage. Typically
ServiceConnect "programs" are written as visual work-flows via the
workflow designer. This makes it fairly straight-forward once you get
the hang of it ( however see the catch below! )

I use S/C for a variety of tasks, typically associated with the
loading of data into say the MPF, and making mass changes to existing
data once it has been loaded. So, if we want to change the MRP rules
for 1,000 parts, then I can write a workflow to do this. Try doing
that by hand!! I could also use it to create sales orders from an
Excel spreadsheet sent by a customer. Really the list is endless as
you have access to just about every webservice...

Again I would stress that I would struggle to be without it.

However, now for the catch. Unless you have a good IT dept. you are
going to struggle as writing the workflows is flawed because Epicor
do not actually tell you how the webservices interface to the outside
world. I read the book ( but this also doesn't give you the critical
data ), and then ended up having to fork out for training with the
clever guy from Epicor. It was worth it, as I know have a good idea
of what to do, and my work-flows mostly work! There is still some
black art stuff to it at times, and typically once you get a workflow
working its best to quit while you are ahead and leave it alone. It
will frustrate the heck out of you to start with, but if you stick
with it, its worth it.

ServiceConnect is very useful, and I know that over time we will make
more and more use of it...

Good Luck!

Nick

We have Service Connect in use with Vantage 8.03.405a, to process EDI
between Vantage and our EDI Translator from Sterling Commerce
(Gentran). It works well, but was somewhat complex and expensive to
get everything setup and working. I know other companies who also do
the same for EDI and Vantage.

We also used Service Connect during implementation to populate a
sizeable volume of Customer and ShipTo data....again, worked well,
once the workflows were hammered-out.

We don't use it for EDI, but otherwise dito. We purchased another
company, and we used service connect to populate their parts,
customers, and vendors in the system. We use it to populate annual
budgets, manage mass changes to parts, and are looking at using it to
integrate with some external tools (ADP, and Primavera Scheduling).

I only have a couple of complaints. It has a memory leak which
prevents you from being able to manipulate very large data sets
without breaking the data up in chunks. The biggest issue for me has
been the number of small nuances that are undocumented. Doing the
basic tasks is fairly straightforward, but adding any complexity to
the scripts takes a lot of research and trial and error.

I'd agree with this. ServiceConnect is a little painful to work with
as there are some nuances that can trip you up. I'd say that's true of
Vantage in general. J

Hi Charles,
We have not yet purchased the module but are considering it for the
exact same purpose. Is there a background process that can be run to
automatically pick up the orders or do you manually have to invoke
the import process?

Thanks

SC supports a number of different "input channels" or "listeners":

File - Watches a directory for files, which are processed and deleted
from the input directory.

FTP - Periodically scans an FTP directory similarly to the File
channel.

IBM, Sonic and MS Message Queuing - You can post messages to message
queues from other apps and pick them up here.

POP3 - You can process e-mail messages as input.

You can also post data to these channels as output/speakers, plus COM,
HTTP and SMTP channels, so there is a *lot* of flexibility here.

Kersten,

It is all done automatically with background processes (Input Channels). Our channel monitors an FTP site that the files are dropped into once the customer has placed an order. The input channel is monitored based on a predefined schedule rather that 24/7. IT is handled this way because it does not require any outside access into our system. Other processes (channels) automatically occur that notify the customer as well as the sales department that the order has been received. There aren't any manual processes that need to occur other than maybe after accounting cancels an order because the customer is on credit hold at which time the sales department must notify the customer to help in alleviating the problem.

You would be pleased with the ability SC provides you in automating the processes. The only processes we were not able to automate was the printing of the SOA and the picklist. It seems that SC is not able to trigger Crystal Reports. It has been reported to support but it does not appear there is going to be a resolution for that one.

Charles,

Does SC support triggering an export of a specified BAQ result dataset (csv prefered by xml OK)?

Frankly, I would find that to be a much more useful feature than a trigger of a Crystal report.

Hi Charles,

We have not yet purchased the module but are considering it for the

exact same purpose. Is there a background process that can be run to

automatically pick up the orders or do you manually have to invoke

the import process?

Thanks

Kersten

AFAIK the individual conversions are stored as xml files within a folder that has the name of your workflow - the actual connections might be stored in the db - never looked too hard to verify.

The 'configuration state' of Service Connect is kept both within the MSSQL database it uses, as well as within IIS via the 'Schemas' virtual directory, which on my system points to 'C:\Program Files\Epicor Service Connect\SCS'. In addition, all of the XSLT files are stored in the filesystem under:

C:\Program Files\Epicor Service Connect\System\Services\DES\

Basically you'd want to back up the database, the 'Epicor Service Connect' directory in the filesystem, the Inetpub directory for IIS, and the IIS metabase to backup Service Connect state.

Backing up the system from the SC admin tool (right-click on the Connectivity node and select Backup) backs up everything related to the workflow state, including the dependent web services, XSLT, XSD, etc.

This morning, I tried to do something that was discussed in that great
ServiceConnect WebEx. I tried to clear data from a field using the
[Delete] tag. I had a Ship To update, and wanted to clear a field. In
Excel, I entered [Delete] in that particular column, but when I looked
at the Ship To afterwards, that field in Vantage actually shows
[Delete]. Did I do it wrong?

I have always used the method called out in the Web Services Developers Guide (page 33 ?)

Clear the field (colName)
on the RowMod use [Clear=colName]

where colName is the field you are clearing. Multiple colNames can be specified seperated by commas
