Service Connect

Service Connect has an option to backup or Restore your workflows.  Right click on the Connectivity node in Service Connect.  You should see options for Backup or restore.  Once it is saved, then you can update your system.  You will then have to verify your folder directories are linked in if you changed their locations and I would touch each workflow and check them.

My organisation runs service connect 8.3 in a Windows 2008 environment and the web services run under the network admin account. The password on that account has not changed in years, mainly because no-one here fully understands how its used in Service Connect and also because its embedded in several other applications. The time has come when we will have to bite the bullet and make the change, however I am less than clear as what needs to be done.

I believe the existing service references need to be reimported using the new service account. Beyond that I'm struggling, there are several services running on the host which presumably will also need updating.

Can anyone out there advise ?

We are working with Service Connect for Vantage 8.0 at this point in a
test environment, which according to the Help screens allows access to
outside database data using XML from Vantage.Has anyone worked with
this yet?

When dealing with the Workflow Designer I am not seeing the entire
toolbars as indicated in the Help screens and only see the Select Item
and not the connector, spltter,etc.

Also, when working through the configuration is there a process
that should be used as to what steps first? I have printed out the
help file and have kind of toyed around following the flow the help
document. Thanks in advance for any help anyone can give me.
This is a license file issue I believe. I had received a new license
file about a week ago that resolved the problem with the new release
(8.1 as I recall)

I am still trying to get Service connect up and running after about 3
months of on and off trials, upgrades, patches etc...

Still the only documentation that I have found is the installation
guide and the guides for Web Service Developers. We had a 4 hour
session with an Epicor rep, taking us through his sample st-up of a
Part Import scenario using service connect, but even he had no product
documentation.

Does anyone have or kow of any documentation for Service connect?

Rob Willhite
Enkeboll Designs.
AFAIK just those guides and the program's help are it.
Everything elase is trial and error hands on experience..

Bernie.

Anybody out there a good resource for Service Connect? I am trying to
build a workflow that will update our parts data from a CSV file. Not
having much luck, though. If you can offer suggestions, or if you
have already done something like this, please let me know. Any help
would be appreciated...

Are you aware Epicor publish a Service connect manual. It is very
complete and has lots of good examples. I think it costs $50. But
that can be cheap compared to all of the time you might waste.

Already have it! J

Have it, "Service Connect 8.2 Student Manual", "Epicor Service Connect
and Epicor Vantage", and my class notes.

What version of ESC are you using?
There is also a manual available for ESC that is also very helpful to start with to answer
some of your early questions.

Does anyone know of any resources for Epicor Service Connect (outside
of Epicor)? I would like to have someone help me with a couple of
issues.
Don't know much about Service Connect. We are doing EDI implementation and I have a choice of the Runtime version of SC or the full version at a cost.(Not cheap I might add). Are there any specific advantages you can think I may have with the full version? Can I use it for other kinds of data mapping? Please give me a few examples. Any help will be appreciated. Thanks.

We were faced with the same dilemma. If you have some one in house
that you think is capable of designing and developing service connect
programs, i would definitely say is a tool worth having. We are in a
mulitcompany environment and we mostly use it for maintaining
transactions between the two companies, but we also use it for price
updates, and much more. Anything that you would do over and over
again is a good candidate for Service Connect. Saves a lot of time.
Service Connect runs upon receiving a file (xml, txt, excel, email
with attachment...). That file will contain your starting
information, like an excell file with a list of parts you want to
update along with their new price, vendor and vendor part number. You
write your service connect program to then call the necessary Vantage
Webservices to update Vantage. Almost everything you can do in
vantage manually, can be duplicated programmatically through Service
Connect.

We are on version 6.1 but are in the beginning planning stage to upgrade to 8. I've heard about Service Connect from our reps but I wanted to get feedback on exactly what it is and what it can do for me.

Also, is it easy to use or does it require heavy programming?

Thanks,

There is really no coding to speak of with Service Connect. All the
code is done for you. We have been using Service Connect for 1.5 months
now and it is very powerful to move data into and out of Vantage.
Highly recommend it.

Very powerful to link up external applications and communicate
bi-directionally.

Equally convoluted to manage and set up for the average joe.

It has great potential.

Service Connect, mmmm, we have been using it for about 1 ½ years now...with some major applications built to handle a multitude of things from processing EDI from an outside source, to preparing purchase reqs from multiple databases for Vantage. The product is good and automates anything you can do in Vantage manually however, even though it is sold and supported by Epicor, it is a third party application. Support leaves a lot to be desired.

It does take xml programming knowledge especially when you begin to get in the heavy duty workflows and programming. I would NOT recommend it for the end user unless it is for minor automations. Put into the wrong hands it can take things out of Vantage as well as put things in...

Is there anyone out there who has experience of Service Connect and can
advise on a small problem I'm having using it following on from
applying the 405 Service Pack ?
The service pack was successfully applied to the Vantage Server,
however when I started running data imports using Service Connect the
Service Connect admin console started reporting errors - Version
mismatch between client (404) and server (405) - and nothing is
imported.
I have checked IIS and its running the .net framework 2.0.
To say the documentation on this service pack is ambiguous on the
subject of Service Connect is putting it very mildly.
I'm aware that theres a patch for this service pack but I'd prefer to
get everything up to the same level before applying it.

Thanks in advance for any/all helpful suggestions.

WAM
Did you re-install Web Services after installing the SP?

1. Go to the WebServices directory - probably c:\epicor
\mfgsys803\webservices.
2. Run the WS-Configuration[.Net2.0 Edition].exe program.
3. Select the Reinstall All check box. Click Update Site.

Nigel.

You will have to update the webservices

Use WS-Configuration to update them.

Already tried that...

If I do it on the Vantage server it process without an error, yet
when I go to do a workflow it again flags up the version mismatch.
The documentation tells you to copy the web services directory from
the Vantage server to the Service Connect server - but doesn't tell
you precisely where - so I copied it to Program Files\Epicor Service
Connect. Running ws-config from there gives me "Microsoft Web
Services Enhancements 3.0 does not seem to be installed. Cannot
continue". I believe this is related to a 64 bit windows server
issue, however the server this is running on is 2003 32 bit.
