Service Connect

> What other helpful processes has anyone done with service connect?

I have used it for:

- basic/intermediate data import before the Data Management Tool was available (this is a pretty slow process)
- Indirect labor entry for holiday time on large number of employees (saves hundreds of entries for each holiday)
- EDI import routine (V8 uses a provided workflow for this)
- AP CSV import routines for bank rec

This was all V8 stuff. E9 has enhanced some of these processes. For example, now it offers a better labor entry solution. The DMT tool has replaced the data import functionality and the EDI import workflow has been re-written as an object.

We have used it to:

* Import Quotes from our external quoting system
* Import Jobs from our custom engineering group

We are currently working on:

* Automatically serializing jobs
* Doing automatic serial matching (we always have Qty 1 jobs)
* Automatically clocking out users when they clock out of our Kronos timekeeper system

Chris said it all perfectly.

I'd like to underscore his "time to dedicate" comment. It's unlike any
other programming interface I've seen in my career. It's a powerful tool
and with that comes a steep learning curve.

I never did learn it just because of that learning curve; it humbles you.
I've been told that folks without much programming knowledge pick it up
easier than others who may have extensive coding in their background.

I have ultimately abandoned SC and carefully wrote SQL stored proc's and
triggers to do what I needed Service Connect to do. I've been using SQL
varieties for 20+ years, so it's like riding a bike for me. To me, Service
Connect is like landing the space shuttle with one arm tied behind your back
while someone sprays salt water in your eyes and shouts Russian expletives
at you.

It is best if it is on a dedicated server for resource purposes. It is great
for complex imports, data and process automation and for integrating 3rd
party products. It is great for exporting data as well. The cons are it
takes a while to learn the product. To use it you really need to know the
tables, fields, and the business objects and methods. You also have to have
to learn how to read trace files. Service Connect is a great tool as long as
you have the time to dedicate to developing the workflows and learning the
product.

We use it for:
Archive of UD tables
Verify outgoing EDI auto processed
Capture historical data
Create rows in UD tables and later update those
EDI inbound
Extract labor hours for outside payroll
Mass changes to parts
System Monitor review of Immediate Run Requests
Monitor Vendor certificates expirations
Add date document processed in APM to field in Epicor
Create pack slips and partial shipment lines
Update ship by date for customer who only picks up on Tuesdays

Yes, there is a big learning curve. Once you use it, you will see there is not much that you CAN'T do in Service Connect. But as mentioned, other tools can be used too.

By the way Vic, did you know the newer versions of Service Connect you can connect to any SQL database? Along with other types of data connections too?

I am in the middle of implementing a Sales Order import workflow. Would you have the files you are using for import, and the workflow exports where I could see how it all works? I did the trace, and then created the workflow in the designer, but the input file formats is whats got me scratching my head currently. Thanks for any help you can provide.

Also, the ability to create RMA's from a CSV file is also one of my assigned projects, so if you can let me know how you are doing that, it would also be appreciated :)

Hi All,

Just wondering if anyone out there might have some information on a Service connect Workflow connecting to an .net that will delete certain files on a shared directory? Or is this even possible through service connect?

Thanks

Thanks Bill And Ted!!

My organisation runs service connect 8.3 in a Windows 2008 environment and the web services run under the network admin account. The password on that account has not changed in years, mainly because no-one here fully understands how its used in Service Connect and also because its embedded in several other applications. The time has come when we will have to bite the bullet and make the change, however I am less than clear as what needs to be done.

I believe the existing service references need to be reimported using the new service account. Beyond that I'm struggling, there are several services running on the host which presumably will also need updating.

Can anyone out there advise ?
