Size of a Field

I hate to admit this, but my solution was as easy as selecting word wrap !!!
I thought RB wouldn't read past the Data Dictionary format, but that wasn't
the case.

I have created an RB report that I am hoping will replace a Crystal report
that we currently use. About the only problem I have encountered is that we
use OrderHed.Character03 in a VB form and sometimes write a novel about any
special instructions (yeah it probably should be in OrderHed.Comments, but I
don't want to change procedures or stop the existing report from working).

RB sees Character03 as X(200) and that is all it will display, the Progress
Data Dictionary says the same thing. <snip>
Hello

Our company has just had our first meeting with our ISO support
guy ...... we are trying to become ISO 9001 registered.

I would like to hear from any of you who are registered, or about to
be registered to give me insights, info, etc. reguarding how your
company approached the Document handling and control .... our ISO
rep. has suggested that we use Visio (which I will purchase today) I
know that a lot of the documents and information we need is already
in Vantage(4) but the 'other' users have not used (or implemented),
or even looked into using a bunch of the available information via
Vantage.

I suggested to the others that if they would look they would find the
needed information, well at least a bunch of it already in Vantage (4)
(assuming that the data was put in correctly).

I would like to hear from any one who has any insights and or
suggestions. I really mean ANY thing.

We set up the ISO 9001 quality documents in Adobe Acrobat and they can be
accessed by anyone with the viewer. The Quality manager updates the pdf
file as needed and it works out pretty well. The full package of Adobe
Acrobat allows him to index all the documents and policies in one pdf file
which is searchable. We just share it on the network and everone can access
it... also linked it on the intranet.

Good luck

We are in between audits looking for final registration in October. We
delayed this whole process a year in order to get Vantage implemented.
Partly because some procedures would change and partly to take advantage of
features in the system to assist documentation. We were already very well
documented on procedures so this has gone very smoothly. Having external
written procedures to document (notes & comments) within Vantage has been
crucial.

Visio is a great product and has some pretty good wizards for quality
process documentation. It also makes flowcharts easier to integrate with
MS-Office documents.

As for controlled documents and availability of procedures to look at (but
not modify) I am looking at converting all the Word documents to PDF and
putting Acrobat Reader everywhere that it isn't already. One person will
maintain (and control) the Word docs and update the PDF's for on-line
viewing.

Hi Kevin,

Having experienced ISO implementation and certification with two
companies, there are a couple of things you want to pay close attention
to from the beginning:

1) Make sure your processes are performed according to the control
parameters you wish to use
2) Make sure you document your processes according to how they are
performed
3) Document (and control) those processes or procedures used when
something "falls out of control" or outside specifications

As far as Visio goes, I think it's a fine software application for
documenting the process flows in diagram format. There are also several
other packages that will do the same thing. Visio is now a Microsoft
product and is one of the high end applications that can also serve many
other uses besides flow diagrams.

It's interesting to note that when organizations begin preparing for ISO
certification (some only achieve "compliance") they tend to miss the
quantum gains by stripping out the non-value added, bureaucratic steps
that hold them back from "being all they can be." If you have any
influence, try to initiate some enterprise surgery on your procedures
before you finalize what you document.

With Crystal more than 200 characters
can be displayed using substring and a formula. Vantage Export will only
dump 253 characters, but a procedure that uses Export will dump more (393
for the order I used).

How do I get RB to display more than X(200) ? I'm guessing that the only
way would be to alter the definition of the field using some Progress field.
If so, how is this done and is it a safe thing to do and recommended ?
