We are planning on doing a mini conference room pilot type testing exercise when we test .408. The feedback from the user community has consistently been (test service packs or you'll regret it). It is also required for us by SOX.
And it is also just the only way to save your sanity. Even if Vantage's release quality were better, you'd still be foolish not to do at least some testing of critical functionality if your business is at all sensitive to unexpected problems with the ERP system.
Folks tend to like to gripe and blame Epicor, and certainly there's plenty of blame to go around when it is pretty clear they don't do anything like the amount of regression or unit testing that is becoming standard practice in modern software development shops. But it is also part of the game of change control. It does mean that most folks don't tend to take up many patches given the overhead.

We had the exact same issues that you have had too. I have submitted this to Epicor in a help ticket and they told me it is a bug and they have submitted it to Development for a future fix. After extensive testing it does make you a bit gun shy to implement patches too soon.
Thanks.
