Switch from Standard Cost to Actual

>>We use mostly non-stock configurators and with this the average >>costing was recommended

One more thing.. this may or may not apply in your case but...
We have very deep BOM's, with lots of materials (manufactured and purchased).

When we tried the combination of non-stock with average costing, we ran into issues. We ended up changing a LOT of parts to stock to reduce these.

One that I remember....
The costed BOM and the mtl estimates on the PDR don't match.
I learned they use different calculatins. The costed BOM rolls all the costs at runtime, but the PDR pulls the average part costs from the part cost table. The problem.... average cost is only updated when a part moves to stock so... nonstock cost estimates are no good on the PDR.

We did this. It wasn't too smooth though. We had to go to the DB and force a
number of the parts, which created a number of issues. Nothing that couldn't
be fixed, but it wasn't much fun.

It can be a finance nightmare too.

Standard cost allows a lot of process errors to go unnoticed or at least
with little impact.

For example, zero dollar po receipts, where zero dollars is incorrect,
can cause havoc on your inventory value.

When I made the switch in a pass life, we had to come up with
customizations that would prevent these types of transactions.

Same here.
If we couldn't cover it with a BPM then...
We also built reports to run daily and address cost issues as soon as
possible.

I'd pilot more if I had to do it over.
We talked about the differences before the change, but I think it can be a
little too abstract until you start making transactions.

[Non-text portions of this message have been removed]
At Metalworks, we are on 9.05.603 and we are all Average costing.

Our prior MRP system was standard costing.

We use mostly non-stock configurators and with this the average costing was recommended. We did have some manufactured component type parts with standard cost yet, but found that the way the cost roll-up was working we needed to switch them to average also.

Prior to implementing we had financial consulting from Epicor run through with our Mgt group the pros and cons of each method.

I like the average costing for our quick turn around, make to order business model. I can see it is probably not for everyone though.

I would run some tests if you can to understand how a negative inventory and out of sequence process steps (like the job backflushing the part before it is received) affects the average.

Overall it fits our business needs.
